It wasn't instantaneous.
It wasn't a case of here one moment gone the next.
She still doesn't understand exactly what happened. She can still remember a time when her heart was an impenetrable fortress, keeping her safe from any further pain.
But then there was Richard Castle.
At first it wasn't hard. He was a jackass. Her walls could stand the poking and prodding of annoying questions. But once the playboy persona stated to slip, showing the caring and insightful man beneath, it got harder to stay guarded.
There were bumps, summers spent refortifying, but in the end, it was no use. He distracted her with laughter and coffee and levity. She ignored the hole he was boring into her walls because she was starting to get tired of always holding in the emotions.
And then one day, the wall was no more, a mere pile of rubble around her feet as she stood with the man who loved her and whom she loved.
So no, it wasn't instantaneous.
But it was worth the wait.
