Summer Afternoons
Summer afternoons. To me, those have always been the most beautiful words in the English language.
They never called it love.
It was always just there. In the corner of Hagrid's smile, in the excitement of Charlie's voice when he spoke of dragons. When he left Hogwarts for the last time, there was a Gryffindor scarf which hung from the rafters in Hagrid's hut. They both loved their jobs, but everything felt easier during the summer holidays.
Charlie checked his watch. They'd agree to talk to each other at while Hagrid was going to have a late lunch, and Charlie would just be finishing the end of his day in Romania. Conjuring a mirror, he looked into it with yearning. Of course, he loved his work in Romania but home was also strolling through the forest at Hagrid's side, hand in hand with the smell of damp earth all around them.
For a few moments, he just watched. Hagrid was humming to himself, waiting for the kettle to boil. There were radishes hanging on the wall, partly obscured by the steam the kettle was emitting. The piercing whistle made one of the dragonlings behind him shift and shoot a burst of flames in the air, Charlie giving it a disapproving look. When he turned back to the mirror in his hands, Hagrid was close and peering at him. Charlie could picture the scene, Hagrid looking at the large mirror they'd bought and hung up on the wall by the armchair Charlie called his own.
"How ya doin'?"
"Good, how are you?"
"Just tryin' not to stare," Hagrid said with awe in his voice. His eyes were on the dragon and Charlie lost himself in the shades of warm brown that held him like a hug in his lover's arms.
Charlie took Hagrid with him as he walked back to his small house on the dragon reserve. They sat, miles apart but drinking beer together and talked about each other's days. It still felt new and exciting, as though they didn't speak for hours each evening and watched the same sun sink low in the sky casting dusky hues over everything.
They never called it love.
They never had too.
