"Vaughn, why is that ring on your finger?"
"Sydney, Syd, you, you've been gone for two years"
"Two years? How, what.."
"We looked, but we couldn't find any trace of you. Syd, this ring."
"NO! Never mind, I don't want to know anymore. I can't handle it right now." Sydney stood up from the bed and walked towards the door.
Vaughn took her by the shoulders, he could tell by her trembling that she was crying. He led her back the bed and made her sit down. "Syd, look at me. This ring, it represents what you and I had. And what I still hope we have."
"I made the choice to wear it after we looked for six months with no sign of you. I was a total wreck these past two years. There were days when I didn't think I had the strength to breathe, much less get out of bed and on with my life. My wearing this ring was my way of saying I hadn't given up, my way of waiting for you."
Sydney was crying in earnest now. Her sobs tore through Vaughn's heart. He reached out to take her in his arms, and her body quickly conformed to his as if two years had never passed. They sat on the bed for several minutes while her tears subsided.
When she was able to speak, she told Vaughn, "I don't know what I did to deserve someone like you. You are the sweetest, kindest, most loving person this world has ever seen. You have been my hero, my rescuer, my ally through the darkest times in my life."
"Syd, the other thing I need to tell you before we leave to go home is that for the past two years I've latched on to a song chorus to help me live each day while you weren't with me."
Vaughn begins to sing in a low voice, "'Cause only God could stop me loving you. Only God could tell me not to. He sent you from Heaven, Just to make my dreams come true, When he opened the door, That you came walking through. Only God could stop me loving you."
"That became the one thing I lived to tell you. Only God could stop me from loving you Syd, not Sloane, not Sark, not your mother, not your dad, not even Kendall." Vaughn could see that everything was taking its toll on Sydney. "Why don't we get you to the plane, get you some food, then you can rest on the way back to L.A."
"Vaughn, I don't care where we go, or what we do. Right now, I want to go home, find out what happened to me, see everyone, and spend time with you."
