Of Flowers and Frustration

Or in which Bilbo Baggins attempts to court a Dwarf King

Bilbo Baggins was many things, but romantic was not one of them. Granted, hobbits tended to have romantic natures, but Bilbo did not exactly have a record of wild success in this endeavor, since it was beyond rude in the Shire to ask a male out for a picnic. That, and that dreadful Lobelia would have run him out of the Shire had she heard of his love for his own gender. So over time, Bilbo had gradually stopped thinking romantic thoughts, resigning himself to a life of bachelorhood. Then he went to save Erebor from a dragon, met Thorin Oakenshield, and his romantic sense flared up again. Try as he might, Bilbo Baggins could not help but love the stubborn, strong, good-looking King who had shown up on his doorstep completely drenched after 5 hours spent wandering the Shire. The fact that Thorin had left Bilbo with good first and second impressions by not only calming down his company when he arrived, but NOT messing up Bag's End, was a mere coincidence, Bilbo decided sadly. There was just no way that Thorin could love him, he'd decided halfway through. It was impossible, a fairy-tale. Bilbo Baggins did not believe in fairy-tales anymore, but he did harbor the small hope that he and Thorin could possibly be together one day.

That hope had increased significantly when Thorin had hugged him after that fight with the wargs and Azog (Whom Bilbo had decided to hate for the rest of eternity after he'd seen what he'd nearly done to his beloved Thorin). Thorin's hug, and his admission that he'd changed his opinion of Bilbo, caused something in the once-shy Hobbit to shift. Bilbo never figured out exactly what caused this change, but he was now willing to cast aside his fears, and make known to Thorin that he loved him. And being a Hobbit, Bilbo decided to send his message through a medium familiar to him: The language of flowers.

Thus why, when they had stopped at Beorn's home for a few days, Bilbo had wandered off to pick flowers.

A/N: First time writing Bagginshield, and yes, there will be a second chapter. This was beta'd by my wonderful friend Megknsis. Also, I obviously DON'T own anybody in this.
