He doesn't want to do this alone. He can admit his fears, from the clamminess of his hands and the racing of his heart. He is scared of what waits in store for him on the other side. He is scared of the unknown, but he knows he must do this. He would not delude himself any longer to think that they could live this way.

He turns the stone in his hand and waits. He wants her to be with him when he does this. He wants her to see him off. She would be able to make it better, she would allay his fears and calm him down. She would make it less frightening.

She shimmers into being before his eyes, her skin pale and her eyes wide but still as beautiful as that day twenty years when her sickness had finally been too much to handle.

She looks up at him, blinking a bit before an expression of horror crosses over her elegant features. He is standing on a pedestal, like a king before his subject with a collar of rope around his neck and attached to the rafters in the ceiling. But then her face softens and they share a smile, one of understanding and acceptance.

This way, we'll be together. Forever.

He steps off the stool and the rope snags and tightens around his throat. His hands scramble at his neck frantically but he cannot do anything. His dangling legs knock the stool onto its side with a loud clatter as they kick wildly for something to stand on. He feels fear, he feels like he had made a mistake. How could he have done this? Then he looks into her eyes - bright, hopeful, and he forces himself to calm down. This is worth it to see her happy again.

She reaches out and takes one of his hands that has fallen to his side as he gives in. He had been there as she crossed over and now she would do the same.

With his final breath, his body goes limp and the rope stops swinging. The stone slips out of his hand and falls next to the overturned stool. She gazes at it once before she fades away. They are finally free.
