Hello my good readers! So, I finally own "Sons of Liberty" on DVD (yay!) and have decided to start re-working this story. My first challenge was this chapter. I wrote a completely new first chapter, and for the time being the second chapter is what used to be the first chapter, which means there is this huge kind of gap between the first two chapters. That will be fixed very shortly, I promise! I'm already working on how to fix everything to make it all fit together. Just a small note, I love knowing what my readers think of my work. It helps me keep going with what I'm currently working on. But for now, enjoy, and try not to get too confused with it all if possible!
On the morning of August 14, 1765, Alexandra Martin's whole world was turned upside down. Not only did she find out that one of her closest friends, Samuel Adams, was a wanted man, but her family was also leaving on a ship to move back to England. She had no intention of moving to England – she wasn't born there and felt that it was not her home. Her family left her in Boston with nothing but an empty house that soon became the property of Governor Hutchinson and the clothes on her back.
When she was finally alone, she went to find anyone who she thought would be able to help her. She ended up at the tavern Sam Adams and his friends frequented by midday. The bartender greeted her when she entered, and quickly she found Dr. Joseph Warren.
"Alex, what are you doing here?" Joseph asked, very puzzled by her presence.
"Do you know where Sam is?" Alexandra asked the doctor. He gave a small sigh and nodded towards the secret door he stood beside.
"John is talking to him at the moment," the doctor said. "You do know what happened, I'm assuming?" Alex nodded, crossing her arms over her chest.
"It seems he is not the only one in trouble of sorts as well," she said, looking at the ground.
"What's the matter?" Joseph asked her, looking concerned.
"Well, my family left on a ship this morning to move to England. My family's home is now the property of Governor Hutchinson, and the only possessions I have left are the clothes on my back," Alexandra said quickly.
"Oh my gosh Alex, I'm so sorry," the doctor said, putting a comforting hand on her arm.
"I'm not really sure what's going to happen now. I just want to make sure Sam is alright." Joseph gave Alex a soft smile.
"You always put others before yourself, don't you?" he asked. Then John Adams knocked on the other side of the secret door to be let out.
"Alexandra," he greeted her with a nod as he began to leave the tavern. Alex descending the stairs to Sam's hiding spot quietly, wondering how he was holding up.
"Sam?" she said quietly when she saw him sitting with his back towards the door. He turned around when he heard her.
"And what brings you here?" Sam asked, smirking at her. He had held an intense interest in Alex shortly after they first met, but never acted upon his feelings.
"I just wanted to see how you are doing," Alex said as she sat down near him. "Are you okay?"
"Other than being a wanted man, I'm just fine. Why are you here in the middle of the day? What about your family"
"Oh, well… My parents and brother left on a ship this morning for England. They tried to make me go with them, but I want to stay here. So now I have nowhere to go. At least not yet. I'm sure I'll be able to figure out something," Alex said, looking away from Sam.
"What?" Sam said incredulously. "How could they do that to you?" Alex just shrugged, staring at the floor.
"I should probably go," Alex said as she stood up. "Maybe there's a chance I will be able to get back into my family's home."
After Joseph let her out, Tim Kelly stopped Alexandra to speak with her. Apparently Joseph had started spreading the word to all of her acquaintances that her family left her with nothing.
"Are you alright, Alex?" Tim asked her, wearing the same facial expression the doctor had been earlier. Tim was just one of Sam's group of friends who treated Alex like a little sister.
"I would imagine I am, yes," Alex said, growing impatient to leave the tavern.
"Dr. Warren told me what happened," Tim said, stepping closer to Alex so others around them wouldn't hear him. "Where do you plan on going?"
"I'm not really sure yet," Alex replied, sitting down next to him. "One thing I do plan on doing is trying to get my house back. But I think at this point all hope is lost."
"You know you can come to any one of us if you need help," Tim said reassuringly, giving Alex a rare smile.
"And you know how often I actually ask for help from anyone," Alex said with a small smirk.
"Just let me know if you need any help getting back into your house."
After Alex left the tavern, she went straight to her family's home. Governor Hutchinson walked out of the door as she approached the house.
"Good afternoon, Miss Martin," the Governor said as if nothing was wrong. "I hope this day finds you well."
"You know good and well how I am," Alexandra said coldly, stopping in front of the man and glaring at him.
"Yes, well, it is rather unfortunate that your family sold their house. Someone just bought it today, actually, just adding even more to their estate."
"And just who might that be?"
"Mr. John Hancock himself," Governor Hutchinson said with a pointed look. "So I must ask you, miss, if you would leave the premises at once as it is no longer her home." Alexandra glared at the governor before walking off, not really sure where she was going. Dr. Warren found Alex before nightfall and insisted she stay in his spare bedroom for the night, especially since there would most likely be more mobs out in the streets and he wouldn't be there because of the mobs.
The next morning, John Adams met up with Alexandra. At first she wasn't sure what he wanted until he mentioned something about her family.
"Mr. Hancock informed me earlier this morning that you father wrote to him the morning they left for England. He's asked me to find you so he can meet with you about the matter your father wrote to him about," John explained to her.
"When am I supposed to meet him?" Alex said, sounding a little upset about the whole situation.
"In half an hour. At your family's house."
