Sam can't help giving in to Ginger.
He first meets her when she comes with the usual bunch of guys to smoke in the back of his truck. He hasn't been expecting her. He watches silently as she climbs in cautiously, keeping her hand pressed hard to her middle. She'll need this, he thinks, and passes out the joints. Sure enough, after her first drag, Jason elbows her and asks if she feels any better. She giggles and leans against him in reply. Sam watches with a growing curiosity about all things Ginger Fitzgerald, for all things lusty and beautiful.
When Sam meets Brigitte, things are different. She is not lusty or beautiful or even very pretty. She does not have her sister's curves or perfect features. Nevertheless Sam is intrigued because she seems to be hiding so much under her multiple black hoodies and drooping hair. She brings with her hints of a bigger world in which the Beast of Bailey Downs might be real and might have torn a teenage girl apart and might have hit Sam's truck going seventy. Brigitte is having a hard time protecting Ginger, he can see. Sam helps her with her demons because he wants to know her secrets, and because he simply hates to see her so terrified. And because over time he finds he has a growing attraction to all things Brigitte Fitzgerald, for all things ugly and cast aside.
On Halloween night Ginger comes to Sam's party. Her costume is intricate and flattering, a revealing outfit paired with wolf-like makeup and fangs. Everyone compliments her on it, but Sam is scared to death that this is actually the transformation beginning. He always guessed it was Ginger and not her sister whom the Beast had really infected, but now all his speculations are real. Here is Ginger, in Sam's room already half-werewolf and heading for his bed.
It is with self-loathing that Sam gives in to all things lusty and beautiful that night, and it is why he later, when beast-Ginger traps him and Brigitte in the pantry on the last night of his life, he makes the monumental desicion to leave safety first. Brigitte has faith in him but he knows he holds his death sentence in his hand inside that syringe. He knows he does not stand a chance against the new Beast of Bailey Downs. He wants to die, anyway, for how he betrayed Brigitte. He knows she will find a way to survive anyway, even if it means joining her feral sister in the end.
The price for his pleasure is painful, but it doesn't last long. He gives in to what is left of Ginger one final time, without a fight. At least she is not so lusty and beautiful anymore.
