Mason the wolf…the full wolf now, finally justifying the name of his species, looked back at Alex with mourning eyes. She was crying, softly, but very noticeably. Unable to look at him, she sat and put her head in her hands, not wanting to see him go.
He thought he should run. What if he couldn't control himself? What if he hurt her? But…
Alex sniffed sadly.
She felt something nudge her shoulder. "Justin…go away…" she muttered. She was nudged again, and she looked up.
Mason whined softly and laid his head on her knee.
"Mason…?" she sniffed again, and pet his head. "I thought you had to go."
He whined louder.
Unable to keep herself from doing so, she knelt and hugged the blonde canine. Before pulling away, she felt a little odd, then really odd when she turned into a wolf. She looked over in surprise at her brother.
Her brother, who was holding her own wand at her. He nodded at her knowingly, and turned back to his distressed vampire.
She looked back at Mason, who leapt back and fell onto his elbows with his rump high—the classic "Wanna play?" pose. Grinning, she copied him, and the two started to run around, tagging each other.
After Juliet walked out, now looking her age, Alex stopped herself mid-chase to look back at her broken-hearted brother. Mason noticed, and trotted back to her. He gave her an understanding (but un-wolf-like) nod. They touched noses, and he left too.
Justin changed Alex back once she pushed at him. She sat next to him. "You okay?"
"No. You?"
"No."
They both heard a nearby wolf's howl.
