I was talking to my friend Jenna when it happened.

"Destiny Montgomery! Night has chosen thee thy death will be thy birth, Night calls to thee; Hearken to her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the house of night."

The tracker Marked me then. Jenna stared at me wide-eyed, looking at my forehead. "Oh my God, Des!" she whispered as the tracker disappeared.

I winced in pain. Why me?

"You need to get to the nearest House of Night!" Jenna looked around frantically, almost.

"No freaking duh," I muttered under my breath.

I quickly walked to the nearest exit, nearly stumbling. Jenna followed me, with a worried look on her face. I ran to my car and opened the door.

"Is there any way I can help?" Jenna asked.

"Just...just tell whoever asks that I wasn't feeling well. Say nothing about the Mark," I replied.

Jenna nodded. She walked back to the school, looking back over her shoulder.

The longer the fledgling is away from the House of Night...the more likely it is to die... I couldn't let that happen. Even though the only one's who cared about me is Jenna and my foster parents, I couldn't die.

I drove to the nearest House of Night. I stumbled toward the door. I tripped over a rock and hit my head. I could barely hear the voice that was speaking: "Oh dear, another one..."

I woke up and when I did I had awaken to a worried face. I sat up. I asked where I was.

"The House of Night, my dear," the beautiful woman said. "I'm Neferet."

I looked at her. Then I brought my hand to my forehead. The Mark!

I noticed Neferet was talking. "...you may keep your name or change it," she said.

"My name? I can change it?" I asked.

Neferet nodded.

"I'd..I'd like my name to be Destiny Hope Miller."

"That is an excellent choice, Destiny," Neferet said. "Once Destiny Montgomery, you are now Destiny Hope Miller." I nodded. "Come to the dining hall, I will introduce you to some people who may help you, and they are very good fledglings." I nodded again and followed her.
