"We never use transfiguration as a punishment."

Damn right they didn't. What had gotten into Alastor's head? He knew better than that and it made her angry that he would do such a thing. Yes, it was Malfoy and yes, she was sure that he deserved it, but the fact that he would disrespect her school in such a way angered her.

Even if Malfoy the amazing bouncing ferret was an admittedly amusing sight.

Oh, enough of that, Minerva. No use in encouraging this behavior, even with yourself.

"Alastor, what were you thinking?" Minerva crossed her arms, while her foot tapped impatiently. "I mean, using magic against a student? And I hear you were teaching the Unforgivables? Have you gone completely mad? I've heard rumors, but please tell me it hasn't gotten this bad." He'd always been the paranoid sort, but this was ridiculous. This man who stood before her was no longer the Alastor that she knew so well.

His eye swirled and looked at her. She withheld a shudder. That thing got under her skin in the wrong way. "The boy deserved it, needs to learn to be a man," he grumbled and she knew then that he was no longer the same man.

Her face fell. "Alastor, what has happened to you? You use-" She looked down. "I suppose this is my fault, I should have-things were bad then, Alastor, I couldn't let myself lose another husband. You know that's why I said 'no', don't you?" He'd become a recluse after that and she feared she'd ruined him.

Being lost in her own thoughts, she missed the complete look of shock on Alastor's face.

A moment later, she felt his hand in hers and she looked up, her eyes wet.

"Minerva, I-nothing is your fault, it was the war that did this to me, nothing else. Please don't feel guilty, you're far too beautiful to cry."

Minerva laughed a bitter laugh. "Alastor, you always were a charmer." She lifted her hand as if to touch his cheek, but withheld it. She would not begin this again, they were far too old.

But Alastor had other plans. Leaning in, he tried to kiss her, but she pulled away quickly, her heart racing. She knew that she could not do this now, not in the school for anyone to walk in. Perhaps if they were away from the castle…

"I'm sorry, Alastor, I can't…please, don't hex anymore students," she whispered before rushing out of the room.

Chuckling, Barty took a swig of the potion from his flask. Well, well, well. Perhaps this school-year would be interesting in more ways than one. He did enjoy a good game or two and Professor McGonagall really did deserve a good snog, perhaps he'd give her one, someday soon.
