Understanding

Reggie Cole was still in Steve McGarrett's mind as he gave a final goodbye to him and his young son, Kevin. They were going to Washington D.C., where Reggie would finally be able to lock up Jimmy Cannon. The investigation cost Lisa's, Reggie's wife, life.

Reflecting back, Steve was reminded of his father. John McGarrett and Reggie Cole were similar people, given that their wives were killed from them investing dangerous and powerful organizations. Steve wondered perhaps if he met a younger version of his father, bent on revenge for his wife's murder, fueled by grief, and intent to catch the killer, no matter what the cost.

Steve hadn't seen it, because his father had sent him away.

Maybe that was a good thing.

Steve's father had been investigating his wife's death and the Yakuza years after her death. When he had died, he left behind a box, hoping that his son would complete the investigation. It was then that Steve realized that his mother was murdered, as his father was. Wo Fat, the culprit, ordered the execution of his father. It wasn't that Victor Hesse had murdered Steve's father because Steve wouldn't let his brother go.

It was more than that.

"Then you'll never understand." Reggie Cole's words rang in Steve's ears. It was true. Steve didn't understand in that way. He didn't have children of his own.

But Steve understood the desperate need to avenge the death of a loved one.

Steve understood the want of killing the person, or locking them up forever.

For right now, though, both of them were stuck. They didn't have any leads. They only had the burning passion in their hearts.

They both would catch them, Steve knew.

They both just had to wait.
