Jenna sat in her tiny apartment flipping through the pages of Allure Magazine. She had been out at the club all last night with her friends Stacy and Miranda, so today was going to be a laid back day. Or so she thought. Just as she finished reading about Amy Winehouse getting sent to rehab yet again, the phone rang. Jenna let it ring. She wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone today. She flipped the page and the phone started ringing again. Once again, Jenna ignored it. It couldn't be so important that they needed her right this second. It was probably just her friends calling for another night out. When the phone rang for a third time, Jenna stood up off her couch and grabbed the phone, pissed off.
"What do you want?" Jenna snapped into the phone. Today wasn't the day to be bugging her. Not after what happened last night with Ben.
"Hello, this is Officer Jett. May I speak with Ms. Sommers?" Jenna automatically smoothed out her act when she heard 'Officer'. Had she done something last night while they were out? She didn't remember doing anything out of the normal.
"Speaking." She said quietly. She hoped she wasn't in too much trouble.
"Ms. Sommers, Miranda, Elena and Greyson were in a car crash. Miranda and Greyson didn't make it but somehow, the child escaped the car. I'm terribly sorry for your loss. But, as there are no other relatives to take care of Elena and Jeremy, you are left as their sole guardian." Jenna couldn't speak. She sunk down to the floor clutching the phone. She was dreaming. She had to be dreaming. "Ms. Sommers?" Jenna had to snap out of it.
"Isn't there anyone else who can take them?" she knew it was a horrible thing to say but she couldn't take care of two little kids. She wasn't ready to have kids of her own, let alone take care of someone else's.
"No, we've gone over everything and you're the only one who can take them. If you refuse they will be sent to foster homes." Foster homes? As in separate homes? Jenna hated kids and didn't want to take care of them but she couldn't let Miranda's kids be separated.
"No, I'll take them. Where do I go to pick them up?" Jenna couldn't believe that she would soon become a guardian of two kids. This was all happening too fast. She needed a drink. Jenna got up and went to the liquor cupboard. She supposed that she'd have to get a lock for that or something now. Jenna grabbed a bottle of Mike's Hard and took a huge drink. This would be the end of her partying days so she might as well enjoy a drink.
"You can come by the station anytime today. I trust they will be in good hands Ms. Sommers?" It sounded as if he didn't think she could raise two kids on her own. To be honest, she didn't know if she could do it either. Jenna said yes quickly and hung up the phone. The phone slipped out of her hands and she felt the ground coming closer and closer until she was right against it. Miranda and Greyson were dead. Elena and Jeremy were now her responsibility. It felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders, and she was no stronger than a bug.
