How The Time Goes By
"Me and Hans would like to announce..."
"Our engagement...!"
Engagement.
"Wait, what?" Elsa blinked.
Anna. Hans. Engagement.
Married?
The new Queen looked over to her sister. Anna was grown and just as tall as her. She had the face of a woman now.
"We would like your blessing on our marriage," the Prince of the Southern Isles smiled.
The two looked so giddy, their smiles hardly coming off. "Hans can live in Arendelle, and your brothers can come to visit...!"
They continued to make plans in front of her.
This was all too soon. Elsa just became Queen. Arendelle's gates were open and a lot of work was still ahead. She was ready to be with Anna again, and now here her sister was with a complete stranger, telling her they were getting married?
"No," she heard herself saying.
The light in the couple's faces died out.
"No, but, Elsa..." Anna began.
"You can't marry someone you've just known for a day. End of discussion, Anna." She began to walk to the exit of the ballroom.
So many years have gone by. It seemed like yesterday when they played in the snow and now Anna was talking to her about marriage? There were so many things Elsa wanted to tell Anna, though thanks to her secret, a door was between them for so many years. It hurt her as much as her powers did. It tore her every time she heard Anna's voice on the other side of the door.
"But, Elsa, please," Anna trailed behind her. "Listen, I love Hans."
"You're still young, you still have a lot more to learn about love."
"How could you know about love? All you ever do is shut everyone out!"
Her insides tightened. If only she could tell her now. If only Anna knew the reasons why they had to grow up separately. Elsa didn't see her own sister grow up. There were so many moments they didn't share.
That was the heaviest guilt of all.
The palace grew too loud. There were too many people. She wanted to be alone. "The party is over," She waved to a guard. "Close the gates."
"Right away, Your Majesty."
"What? Elsa, no! No, wait!" Her hand suddenly felt bare. She looked and saw her glove was in Anna's hand.
No...! They'd all know the secret! They mustn't know!
"Give me my glove!" Her insides raced.
Anna looked just as exasperated. "Elsa, please! Please! I can't live like this anymore!"
Her forehead knotted."Then leave."
Turning, she headed towards the exit, forgetting about the glove.
"What did I ever do to you?!"
Out of all the times to argue, Anna had to pick when there were people in the ballroom? "Enough, Anna."
"No! Why? Why do you shut me out? Why do you shut the world out? What are you so afraid of?!"
She didn't want to shut out her only family member. She never wanted any of this in the first place; separate rooms, her powers, father and mother perishing at sea.
When was all this going to end?
She waved an angry hand. "I said ENOUGH!"
The air grew cold. Opening her eyes, she saw she just created a wall of icicles in front of her. The snow sparkled in the air as it made it's decent to the floor. All eyes were on her.
Oh, no... this was not happening. This was not happening!
Elsa pressed herself to the door. They knew... They all knew. The day she dread for years came true. All that work concealing the world from the truth... gone. She let down Papa's promise.
"Sorcery..." whispered the Duke of Weselton as he hid behind one of his bodyguards. "I knew there was something dubious going on here!"
Anna reached a hand towards her. "Elsa..."
She closed her eyes, freezing her tears as they turned into tiny sparkling snow. She dashed out of the ballroom.
There were so many years that gone by. They both couldn't have a childhood together. There were so many things they didn't share together, all because of the secret.
Those years could never come back for them.
