Disclaimer: I do not own Sailor Moon!

This is a short story I wrote a few years back when I first watched the break up between Usagi and Mamoru. It always upset me the way they made Usagi seem weak. So here is the way I believe Usagi felt and how she would have handled it if she were given the chance.

"The Will To Fight"

It just wasn't fair! After all she had done for him and he could just through it all away as if it were nothing. They had lost everything just to be together, given up their very lives for a love he no longer thought worth it. It was too much!

Usagi's breath came in ragged pants as she ran. Where did she intend to go? It really didn't matter. All she wanted was to escape the pain. To run as fast and as far as her legs would take her. 'Which is pretty far when you have the powers of Tokyo's most loved superhero.' she thought dejectedly as she reached the north end of the park.

Slowing down to a trot Usagi took in her surroundings. She was in an area she had never been to before. It seemed that this portion of the park wasn't as well kept as the south end where the playground was located. Sighing, she took a seat beneath a nearby tree and allowed her emotions to finally come to the surface. It was hard to act strong in front of her friends and family when all she really wanted was to close herself off. Sure, she whaled and cried in front of the others, but she hid the deeper feelings. The pain and heartache she felt day in and day out were something she wanted to deal with on her own.

The girls wouldn't understand this deep chasm of emotions that filled her heart and tortured her mind.

Pulling out her star locket, Usagi watched dispassionately as a tear fell onto the cold surface before rolling gently off the side to land in the grass below. Not really seeing anything she failed to notice as the sky became dark and the full moon rose up above the city. It was all her fault. Maybe if she had tried harder, acted like the princess he had loved so long ago, he never would have felt the need to let the past go. Sobbing, she clutched the locket to her chest and prayed to be stronger. To be more like Rei with her strength and beauty, or Ami who always knew what to do and never failed in school; to just be better at everything that she did and not klutz out all the time.

A soft beeping sound broke the silence and the trembling form stopped all movement as reality caught hold. This was her life. Not the life of a fifteen year old girl, but of a thousand year old princess with a sacred duty to protect those in need. A destiny far greater than anything she could have ever imagined. Yes, it was hard, but this was her life. Standing, the Senshi of the Moon looked to the full moon. She would not let her mother's sacrifice be for nothing. She was Sailor Moon, champion of love and justice. She was the future and if Mamoru wished to leave his destiny behind so be it. She could do this on her own if only to protect the ones she loved.

Putting the locket back into her pocket, Usagi answered the call from her friends. "Youma! South end of the park. Hurry, Sailor Moon!" came Mercury's distressed voice.

Summoning a calming breath she aloud her transformation to engulf her. Suddenly, the small clearing was suffused with blinding light and a figure was seen dashing toward the south.

'Even those we believe invincible can be brought down by nothing more than harsh words and a lack of belief in oneself. It is the ones that keep going, even when they have no will to fight that are the true heroes. It is in all of us to fight for the greater good and to do our best even if it's not up to the standards of others. At the end of the day it is only you that can decide if you have failed or not. I choose to fight.'
