Broken Promises

...because, really, that's all they ever were. A broken promise.

~oOo~

Kagome knew long before she was swallowed by the well and separated from the group that it would happen, and despite how selfless her friends believed her to be, she wasn't... because she kept pretending.

It was a constant weight leaning over her shoulders - a reminder that, no matter how much she wished it, she was not a part of their world and would never, ever belong there. It didn't matter what her friends said, or how much she pretended that she could belong there alongside Inuyasha...

The truth was that she belonged in another world. The truth - the stunning, heart-shattering truth - was that she was just a pawn meant to help the gods get rid of the Shikon jewel. She wasn't a priestess, didn't belong in the world of demons and fairy tales and this seemingly nonexistent part of history. Living it she might've been, but none of it mattered.

It didn't matter that she had been the one to get rid of the jewel.

It didn't matter that she had promised to be beside Inuyasha's side forever.

It didn't matter that she had a little fox demon who needed her.

It didn't matter that she had spiritual powers. It didn't matter that they were extraordinarily strong.

It didn't matter that her past life had belonged in that world.

It didn't matter that she had gotten used to the beautiful, wild, pure world and that she loved traveling.

It didn't matter that she wanted desperately to stay.

It didn't matter...

[It did matter. But not to those that could change anything.]
