Somer Rahne
He could imagine it now: He and Jean, married. Mr. and Mrs.
Scott Summers. Mr. and Dr. Scott Summers. Dr. Summers. Dr.
Jean Summers. Dr. Jean Grey-Summers.
Scott Summers(natch) sighed and went back to trying to grade
papers. It wasn't working. All he could think of was his impending
engagement. *Possible* impending engagement. If she said yes.
Without his say-so, his right hand slid into his pocket, to grasp the box that
lay there. Inside was just one of the many testaments of his love for Jean.
His brain, sensing weakness within, decided at that moment to send
him a few doubts, just for the heck of it.
What if she said no? What if she laughed in his face? What
if she was having an affair-- no, a menage-a-trois!-- with Ororo and the
Professor behind his back?! What if he was just a cover story for her
sick little habits that he had no idea about because he was so straight-laced
that he didn't have a clue about what to look for?!?
~Scott!~
The young man jumped at the psi-yell.
~Let go of the ring-box before you ruin it, Scott,~ the Professor
told him.
Scott complied, realizing that his fingers were white, and the
velvet on the box was going to become *crushed* velvet in a minute....
~Calm down. She won't laugh in your face.~
"But-- but how do you *know*?" Scott asked out loud,
instantly grateful that there was nobody around.
There was a silence on the other end of the connection, but it was
a Silent silence; one that said, "What, are you stupid or something?"
Scott managed to send chagrin through the connection.
"Does that mean she might say no?"
~....I didn't say that.~
But it was too late. Scott had picked up on the hesitation
and grasped onto it like a barnacle to a whale.
"She will, won't she?!" he wailed. "She'll
refuse me and even though she won't laugh in my face, she'll laugh behind my
back, which is almost as bad, except I won't see it!!"
There was a telepathic sigh, then the Professor sent comfort
through the link.
~She loves you very much. And she has no idea about the
ring. And even though no man on earth has ever been able to figure out
women, I doubt she'll say no.~
The Professor nodded to himself as he answered the list of all the
insecurities he had skimmed off the top of Scott's mind.
~And she doesn't have any sick little habits short of drinking
Starbucks.~
Scott sighed in happiness. He *knew* about the Starbucks.
"When should I ask her?"
The Professor sighed. ~She's heading your way. I'll
send her in if you want.~
Scott grinned, running a hand through his hair. "Sure,
why not. I can do this. I can do this. I can do this. I
can--"
"You can do what, Scott?"
"Eep!"
Professor Xavier smiled at his student's. They would make a
cute married couple, if Scott would get the stick-- and his head-- out of his
ass.
