He was watching her again; she could feel his eyes on her back. Ever since that night in the car when he showed her his true self, she had felt his eyes on her. Why? Why did he show her what he was? She didn't have time to finish her thought. Her father had just walked into the diner and was calling her.
"Sophia"
She turned around shaking the cobwebs from her head. "What can I get you tonight?"
"You okay sweetie?"
"Yeah, just tired that's all. So what do you feel like tonight?"
"How about a burger and onion rings?"
"All that grease is bad for your heart."
"Fine a burger and a salad"
"Better" she said writing his order down and walking towards the swinging doors.
She handed the order to the cook and looked through the plates, table two's order was ready. Table two was Luke's order. She was dreading this. She picked up both plates and moved through the doors. Once she was out of the double doors, Sophia caught Luke's eyes starring at her. After wadding through the tables she placed the plates in front of Luke and Sean without a word to either. As she started to walk away Luke grabbed her arm causing a gasp and looks from some of the patrons.
"Uh, um, can I get some ketchup for these fries?" He asked.
"Yeah, sure" she said moving back to the kitchen.
She grabbed her dad's salad and a bottle of ketchup from the back and stopped at the door to take a deep breath and prepared herself for her father's questions.
She handed the bottle to Luke. His hands lingered on hers for several seconds before she pulled away.
Three hours later the rush was gone and only table two remained. In ten minutes she would be able to clean up and leave. After asking them if she could get them anything else she slipped the bill onto the tabletop.
At quarter after eleven she left through the back door only to be spooked by a dark figure waiting outside the door. The figure spoke at her jump.
"I didn't mean to scare you."
It was Luke. "What do you want?"
"You seemed kind of weird in there tonight. . ."
"Oh, and you wanted to make sure I was okay?" She asked with a lighter tone.
"Yeah"
Silence
"About the other night" Luke started
"It was nothing"
"Yeah. So are you okay?"
"Yup" she said still avoiding his eyes.
"Can we talk?"
"We are"
"Last time I checked, talking involved eye contact"
She finally met his eyes and almost smiled when she noticed they were not glowing. "Sorry, I, um"
"Your afraid of me"
"What? No, No, I'm not"
Silence again.
"Okay maybe I was"
"So you are," Luke said moving towards her
"Was, okay, was," she said not backing down.
He leaned in and their lips met briefly. She didn't pull away. They only broke apart when they we're out of air.
