Authoress' Notes: Well hello everyone! As I've stated this is my first fanfic ever. Please bear with me, as this might not go so smoothly.
Disclaimer: I don't own any of these characters. Disney is kindly letting me borrow them. However, I do own Jack's thoughts, so please review on that.
Embracing Death
It had been only a fleeting moment, the kiss. Her soft lips pressed upon his, and his strong arms around her waist, pulling her close. A warmth spreading down his spine and taking hold in the pit of his stomach, whilst his tongue searched for entrance to a willing mouth.
An entrance which Jack had not gotten, for the next thing he had heard was a clicking sound. Instantly he knew what she had done. He was chained to his ship... and to death itself.
"Can't you see?" Elizabeth had asked, her eyes searching his as if she were trying to peer into the very depths of his tainted soul. "It's not us they want. It's you."
She had leaned forward as if she were coming in for another kiss. Jack's heart sank as she pulled back when he started forward.
"I'm not sorry," she whispered truthfully. So this is how it will end, Jack had thought as he strained against the bounds of his chains.
"Pirate," he had said roughly at the retreating back of Elizabeth Swan.
She had turned once more at the sound of his voice, her cheeks pale, glistening tears streaming down her face, and a pure, loathing look in her brown eyes. That look pierced straight through Jack's heart now as he remembered it and he was truly sorry.
Sorry for everything he had brought upon these people, his friends. Sorry for dragging them into his mess of a life and causing them so much heartache. Sorry for ever kissing Elizabeth in the first place, forever planting in her that seed of curiosity, which would now be his undoing. But most of all, he was sorry for being a coward. Yes, it's true; Jack Sparrow was indeed calling himself a coward.
And now, he stood before the Kraken that was emerging from the depths of the sea feeling not much more courageous than two seconds before.
A large, bellowing roar issued from the creature's mouth, cutting the silence like a sharpened knife through bread.
There was still the option of jumping off the ship now, of saving his skin, but Jack knew deep in his heart of hearts that he would never be able to live with himself if he did. 'Twas now or never. Only a few steps, and Jack would be gone. Dead. History. The end. Eternity.
Eternity, pondered Jack, was an awfully long time, longer than even he could imagine. An eternity in purgatory without friends, without the sea… without Elizabeth. Her face loomed up in his minds eye, beautiful and terrible to behold, hatred still etched upon the contours of her face. She hated him for trying to come between herself and Will. Jack suspected she even hated herself for giving in to his lusting. But, did he hate her for doing this to him? For setting him up like this.
No, Jack told him self more forcefully than he had intended.
Death really is just the next great adventure, right? A trace of Jack's old mischievous smile played at his lips as he unsheathed his sword. The Kraken loomed up before him displaying rows of sharpened teeth, yellow with age.
"'ello Beastie," Jack whispered and with one step forward he willingly embraced death.
