Throughout the day, I used the Stalkers as target practice. There was but one left and he was a spry one. Dodging my bullets every time until he faltered and my last shot pierced his skull.
"Well, there's another notch on my rifle." pulling the lever on my sniper, I emptied the clip as I heard the resounding cry of my partner.
Graceful as ever, she dove into the cave before making an immediate turn and gliding over to land on my arm.
Rubbing the scruff of her neck gently, I pulled a treat out from a pouch on my hip.
"Any news Blood? Anything we should warn Roland about?"
She flapped her wings slightly and clicked her beak.
Nothing new apparently.
Still, she had done her task well, and deserved a reward as such.
Handing her the piece of dried meat, I looked out as the sun began to set.
"We should catch some shut eye girl. We only get a few hours of darkness before the blistering heat dries us up worse than your treats." once more, she clicked her beak in acknowledgment.
Extending my arm out, I let her jump to her perch so I could lay down on the small cot I had set up.
Sleep was hard for me to come by as I was often needed for scouting. So I savored it when I could get it.
Though, on this night, I couldn't seem to fall into the world of dreams.
Something was wrong, I could feel it.
It was unexplainable, even to myself, but I felt something bad was bound to happen soon.
My mind wandered as I lay there restless.
Handsome Jack and his robot army were destroying this already decrepit rock in space.
Already so many innocent that merely came here out of curiosity have died or been fatally injured.
On top of all that, our only hope rested on a gang of psychopaths we had little knowledge of. Consisting of: a rogue Commando who turned his back on his comrades for the sake of glory.
A lost Siren who's only purpose on this planet is to find what even Lilith couldn't.
A cannibal, steroid abused midget who was born on this rock.
An Assassin who has gotten so good at what he does, he does it as second nature.
An eighteen year old on the run from intergalactic law enforcement for murdering her classmate over some idiotic fair.
The worst had to have been the last guy.
Krieg.
He was literally a Psycho Bandit.
Like the ones Lil and I used to blow up, melt, incinerate, and shock to death. How could they trust him above all?
Then again, thinking about how Brick, Roland, Lil, and I met, I suppose I had no right to judge.
We had gotten into so many arguments, I was surprised Brick didn't just bash our skulls in and roast us over and open pit fire.
Maybe they weren't so different.
I felt something on my stomach and upon looking down, I immediately sat up.
"What's wrong Blood?" it was odd for her to move from her perch, unless she sensed danger.
She didn't respond, she simply shifted and fell asleep on me.
Scritching the back of her head gently, I chuckled. She must have sensed my worry and sought to comfort me.
With a sigh, I fell back on the cot and tried to fall asleep.
"Sleep tight girl."
