Walter sat at the table in the kitchen typing away on his computer to his latest program while the Led Zeppelin song barring from Toby's speakers passed effortlessly through his ears. He tried to concentrate on his work, but he was constantly distracted. This was why he never worked down here, he could hardly focus. It was not the music, however, that kept Walter's mind from his software.
Paige sat across from him with piles of paperwork scattered around her. She was completing the team's bills and taxes for the month. She would occasionally hum along to the song if she knew it. Walter secretly loved when she did this. Every time the song ended, he perked up to watch her facial reaction to the next song. Walter did not care for music, but it made him happy when Paige was happy, and she seemed to very much enjoy music. When Walter was sure that Paige was not looking, he would lift his eyes from his screen and study her carefully. It was most enjoyable when she was relaxed and happy.
Walter watched as Paige's eyes light up when a song she enjoyed came on. The first thing Walter noticed about Paige when he looked at her was her eyes. They were the most intriguing color brown Walter had ever seen. He could count the various shades and pigments in them. When light caught her face just right, he could see strands of gold reflected out of them. He had never seen human eyes so mesmerizing. He would find himself constantly lost in them. He was also lost in all the perfect angles of her face. Her high cheekbones were alined perfectly with her chin. Her angular face created a perfect contrast with her soft eyes. Walter internally measured all of her features and their relation to all her other features. Her nose was in perfect alignment with the center of her thin lips, which stretched into the most beautiful smile.
Her smile. Walter could think about Paige's smile for hours on end. Paige's smile often made a perfect 40 degree angle. He could calculate its length with the formula he had memorized: 2π*40/360. All of Paige's features, from the distance of her eyes to the length of her nose, aligned with some aspect of the Golden Ratio. She was as perfect as any human Walter had ever seen.
"Walter?"
"Hmm?" Walter shook his head as he came back to reality. His eyes quickly flicked down to his screen, where the numbers were far less impressive. He could feel his cheeks flushing as Paige had caught him starring at her.
"Are you ok? Did you need anything?" Paige reached across the table and grabbed his hand.
"Nope, no. I'm fine," he said as he ripped his hand from hers. He still felt the trace of an electric shock from her touch.
"Ok Walter," Paige smiled as she turned back to her own work. She knew that Walter was thinking very hard about something, and she had a feeling that she knew pretty well what it was.
What Walter did not know was that Paige snuck glances at him herself.
