He was a Prince (sort of, he was actually a king one of three kings all brothers) and he was looking for his one love (mate) a princess but not just any princess, a true princess. He met many who claimed to be just that but he could never be sure, he didn't have his brothers power. When he got home from his travels he was upset, he just could not find his princess.
One night there was a dreadful storm, lightning streaked, thunder roared, and rain was crashing down on the castle walls. It was a dark and fearful night out (not that it phased or bothered the inhabitants of the castle). From nowhere in the midst of the raging storm there came a knock at the castle doors. The Eldest King went to answer it himself. A princess stood out in the downpour soaked from head to toes water streaming out from her heeled shoes. And yet she claimed she was a true princess.
'We shall see if that's true soon enough.' the Eldest Queen thought to herself. She said nothing but walked into the bedroom and stripped the bed of it's bedclothes, placed a pea in the center of the bared boards before piling 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds atop it. This would be where the princess slept that night.
After much tossing and turning during the night the Old King, Old Queen and the Younger King came to the princess' room and asked her how she had slept.
"Oh dear god it was horrible!" exclaimed the disheveled princess. "I could barely close my eyes the whole night. Ugh, I don't know what it was, but I was lying on something so piercingly hard that my whole body is black and blue."
They knew then that she was exactly what she claimed to be the night before, because only the truest of princesses had skin so delicate they would feel the smallest pea through so many mattresses and forms of padding. But here is where it gets interesting-ish.
Caius thought that even so disheveled and definitely not looking her best that the princess was beautiful. And he knew she was looking for husband the night she stumbled upon the castle of Volterra not knowing who or what had lived there.
Bella or rather Princessa Isabella knew the second that the doors opened she had stumbled on the lair of the Vampire Kings. She knew the stories and had met her fair share of Vampires over the years so as to know when she was confronted with them who they were. But she didn't fear her story was true and she knew they could not harm a true princess for fear of upsetting the balance of order.
After the three nights of intense burning required to become King Caius' mate, she awoke to the new life that would now be her world completely un-phased except for the passionate, possessive, absolute love to the young King. That very same evening after an eventful hunt (fill in the blank ;) ) the two wed.
That is how Bella became a Volturi vampire queen. The pea lies preserved in the visitor's entrance hall of the castle for all to see. Now you know how it all came to be.
A/N: Howdy so the Old King is Aro and the Old Queen is his mate Sulpicia. In this story Caius has no mate and although they are never really mentioned Marcus's mate never died and they're happily occupied elsewhere in the castle! So yeah AWESOMESAUCE!
