Friend-aversaries sucked.
Seriously.
Well, to Sakura.
She and Ino had been friends for ten years exactly today. But how much did the two really know about each other? Sakura's favorite food was onigiri while Ino's was stirfry. Both girls enjoyed talking more than playing frivolous games.
But how much was actually what they had in common?
It was seeming to be clearer and clearer to Sakura that what mad up friendships the most was history. If the two girls hadn't known each other for so long, would they still be friends? If they walked into a room as strangers, would they walk out with the promise to talk?
Sakura wasn't sure.
Ino had been there for her when no one else was. That red headband had made the biggest difference in the world. Without it, Sakura wouldn't be herself. She'd be hiding behind bubblegum pink bangs. The young blonde had made an impact on the rosette. An impact as large as a crater formed by Sakura's fist.
Anyways, if you're still wondering why Sakura hated her friend-aversary so much, heres why: they made her feel weak.
Picture this. Yamanaka Ino decides not to help one Haruno Sakura ten years ago.
The Yamanaka only feels more secure in herself because theres no one there to challenge her.
The Haruno just...gives up. No one cares about her, and she gives up.
Sakura was no fool. It was pretty clear to her that she was weak, no matter what. Sasuke and Naruto might've made the girl think this more, but Ino was the one who first ingrained this into her mind.
The Yamanaka made her strong, and while she was grateful, Sakura couldn't help but feel she should've been able to feel strong by herself.
Ino adored friend-aversaries.
Her best friend Sakura would come over for the annual sleepover. They would order Ichiraku ramen for the rosette, Barbecue for herself. The girls would chat about stupid things their teams did, watch movies, and huddle under warm comferters that seemed to keep them at the perfect tempature. Then, once all the fun was done, Ino would look at her best friend. Suddenly the girls would leave.
"It's kind of funny." Ino thought, "Every year we just instantly know where to go." And they did.
Ino and Sakura would silently walk to the field where they first met. The waters sparkle, and leaves were just beginning to bud. Goosebumps started to spread along the Yamanaka's arms.
Once the kunoichi arrive, small smiles would grace their faces. After plopping down on the grass and starring at eachother, Ino would thank Sakura.
She thanked her for being there when no one else was and a small tear slid down her cheek and into the corner of her smile.
Sakura could like friend-aversaries. She could be strong for the both of them for a day.
