Twenty years.
The thought ran through Max's head repeatedly. In that letter, he had said twenty years.
Twenty years.
In that letter that he had written to her twenty years ago. On this exact day. April 13.
Twenty years.
She was crazy, she knew this for sure. But he had promised. Promised that if he was still alive, that he would come back for her.
Twenty years.
This was her only chance.
Twenty years.
But what if he'd forgotten?
Twenty years.
Scratch that. Fang never forgot. Ever.
Twenty years.
It was that final though that sent Max flying, at speeds that hit nearly three hundred miles per hour, straight towards that cave.
Twenty years.
She wondered if he'd show up. If he'd even be alive to show up.
Twenty years.
He had to be alive. She'd know if he wasn't. She didn't know how she would know, but she just would.
Twenty years.
By this point, she had reached the cave. She stood at the ledge and looked around. Nothing.
Twenty years.
She felt her eyes start to water. It was what she had expected, but she had still hoped. She had still hoped that he would be there. Her rock. Her Fang.
Twenty years.
A lot could happen in twenty years, she realized. People change. Maybe Fang realized that he was better off without her. Maybe he found a new girlfriend. Maybe he found a new flock.
Twenty years.
Just as Max decided that it was better to leave, to let the past stay the past, a sudden noise to her right alerted her senses and sent her into battle mode.
Twenty years.
He hadn't changed much, really. A bit taller, a bit thinner. A bit more handsome, Max thought with a blush.
Twenty years.
She had no idea what to say. What to do. Should she hug him? Should she roundhouse kick him for all the pain he put her through?
Twenty years.
She was still contemplating this, when she noticed his left ring finger.
Twenty years.
A simple silver ring. He noticed that she noticed.
Twenty years.
The last words she heard before turning around and taking off were, "A lot can change in twenty years, Maximum."
