River sat on the soft and slightly damp grass, leaning her head on the Doctor's shoulder. High above them were towering pillars that seemed to extend endlessly into the clouded sky, shrouded in a mist of eerie music; almost as if they were singing. River looked up at the Doctor curiously, he hadn't spoken much this trip and his thoughts were even further away than her parent's home in Leadworth.
"Sweetie," she began softly, "Is something on your mind?"
The Doctor stayed frozen in thought for a few moments before registering her words and returning her gaze, "No, no, Dear. Nothing."
Knowing him far too well, and not taking 'No' for an answer, River sat up straight and looked him squarely in the eye, "You can talk to me, you know. Or is it spoilers?"
He chuckled at the far too-common word and smiled inwardly. He knew she wouldn't take no for an answer, but he wanted to put this moment off for even just a second longer. The smile faded quickly as his thoughts wandered to the object in his pocket.
"River, I have something I'd like to give you."
Reaching deep into his strangely large pockets, he retrieved a small screwdriver. It as fairly ornate in comparison with his other ones, with an extra doodad here and there; even a set of dampers and a red setting.
"I want you to take this with you, to the Library."
He handed the device to River who took it gingerly in her hands, turning it around and giving it a quick once-over, "You're giving me your screwdriver? Why?"
She looked from her screwdriver to the bittersweet look on the Doctor's face, searching for any readable meaning in the gesture. He simply reached out, closing her hands over the screwdriver and cupping his hand to her cheek.
"Because, River: I am the Doctor and you are my wife, and I will always, always save you."
