All she knew was the pain. It screamed from her every cell. The machine she was lying in, cold and metallic, was forcing her genomes into a different order, cutting and splicing them, changing her.
She was fourteen. Her life had been amazing. Her mother and father, famous photographers travelled around the world, taking photos, going to book signings, living the high life. She had friends in every country she went to with them. She had been educated by her mother on aeroplanes, cruise ships, backs of trucks. That all changed when she went to America. First off it was great to be back there. The people there were fascinated by her British accent. But then came the day when she got lost one day at an amusement park. All she could see was legs. And then her mutant abilities kicked in. She foresaw what would happen to her. Her mother had always said 'When you see things that are going to happen, believe in them, they'll guide you'. She hoped and prayed what she saw wouldn't happen, but when she felt the rough hand on her face, the darkness of the blindfold, she knew it would.
Later, lying on the bed at the 'facility', she was recovering. Her every motion hurt. Then came the knock at the door. It made her jump. Then the fur grew, atarting at the hair line at the back of her neck, brown fur the colour of chocolate ran down her back, all over her, her hands and legs changed shape, her skull and ears. Before she knew it she was in a totally alien form. Then the man came into the room. The one whose face she had seen looking through the glass of the machine. His voice would have been soothing if it was a different situation.
'Ah.. my little cougar, I see we've woken up' he said. He didn't say any more. She ran at him, following a new instinct, like a fire that burned in her. Her jaws circled his throat, she shook her head once, and he was dead. Then she ran, her form changing to that of a half human, half cougar. She didn't stop running til she found the forest, and safety
