England looked down at his watch, it was 7:28AM. Only two minutes left before he, and many others would need to blow the whistle as a signal for his men to go over the top and cross No Man's Land into Germany's trenches. It should be easy, there was a huge chance of succession. After all his boss knew what they were doing, and not to mention France's then again…
Emerald eyes once again glanced over at the men…no, boys who were putting their lives on the line for this war. The Englishman knew for a fact that many of these 'men' were only teenage boys, many only the age of 13 faking their age. Then again there wasn't really much harm was there? This silly little 'war' was only going to last until Christmas, and by then hopefully these teens will have learnt a couple of lessons but at least they'll be back with their family, nice and warm, having a drink and laughing…
"Sir?" an East-London accent dragged him out of his thoughts, Arthur looked up into wide rich chocolate brown eyes. This boy must be at least 15...
Putting that aside the man coughed awkwardly. "Ah, yes." he looked down at his watch. 7:29AM one more minute to go. He looked over at his men and put the whistle closer to his mouth. "Right men. On the whistle, go over the top." each one nodded to show they understood, the look of determination etched on all of their faces. Arthur shook his head to himself, this was going to be easy, maybe a couple of casualties but nothing serious. After all what's the worst that could happen?
7:30AM. Without hesitation Arthur blew the whistle and the men began to climb over.
At 7:30AM on 1st July 1916, the barrage of shellfire lifted. All along the front, Allied soldiers fixed their bayonets to their rifles and obeyed the order 'go over the top' over No Man's Land.
Almost everywhere, the soldiers walked into a hail of German machine-gun fire. The casualties were appalling and nothing could be done to rescue those who were lying wounded in No Man's Land. One Canadian regiment lost 684 out of 752 men in 30 minutes.
By the end of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 20,000 British Soldiers had been killed and 40,000 wounded. Although there was some progress at certain points, there was no overall breakthrough.
O.o.O.o
A.N: Wrote this the other day after History, I'd been meaning to do one for quite a while but meh~ I'm a lazy bitch and those who know me well wont deny it XD
Anyways, so…War. It's a waste of money, time and lives. Today in History we were watching the last five minutes of a video about WWI and it just occurred to me then, that nothing is actually gained from War. Apart from winning it and bossing the losing country around that's it, millions of people die because of something so pointless, and Kyle (guy in my class) said the other day. "Britain and Germany were fighting over who had the most Dreadnoughts, it's like a couple of Primary kids."
-le sigh- I'm going to stop my rant now. Reviews etc. are welcome~
P.S: The info on the Somme was taken out of the History school books
