Lieutenant Awashima was the perfect soldier. Her loyalty, great posture, stern eyes, and scowl on her face screamed "high ranking". She had countless years of experience under her belt and prided herself on rarley being fazed by anything. This morning was different.

Seri Awashima walked down the hall, heels clicking rythmically on the marble sending echos down the long corridor. Stopping by two large mahogany doors, she lifted her hand and politely knocked twice.

"Enter" announced a muffled voice. Awashima did so, pushing the creaking doors open. The sight that met her eyes was suprising.

Reisi Munakata was sitting with one hand was propping up his head, the other hand holding two chess pieces - the black and white king. Munakata looked up from the objects.

"Ah! Awashima, can I help you?" He greeted, carefully placing the pieces down on the chessboard in front of him. The lieutenant noticed that a jigsaw puzzle, the one game she always associated with him was shoved to the side of the desk seemingly without care as some of the pieces were scattered on the floor.

The captain loved control, thats why he loved jigsaws. Everything was already planned and laid out for him. There were no suprises, the outcome was as clear as the picture printed on the box. Jigsaws were predictable and put him in control. So giving up a game that gave him control to take on one that was quite the opposite was simply unfathomable to Awashima.

"Y-your playing chess..." She stuttered. Munakata smiled.

"Contrary to what you may believe, chess is still a controlled game." He said as he moved his thumb over the grooves of the white king.

Awashima stiffened. She never got used to the fact that her boss could seemingly read minds.

"Chess," he continued "is a game with a set of rules. You must protect the king, if the king can't move, the other team wins. As long as these rules exist so does control." Munakata sighed, appearing exhausted which only startled Awashima more. "Though in this game, control is a bit harder to grasp, there is another unpredictable side. " he muttered the last part as he held up the black king, studying it with a scrutinizing eye. Awashima was beginning to catch on.

"Mikoto?" She asked, referencing the black king that was now back on his side, surrounded by pieces of the same color. Munakata smiled.

"You learn quickly. "

"Thank you, sir."

"Mikoto is always unpredictable, but that isnt my concern." He picked the black king back up.

Awashima's gaze was fixated on the two kings, now held between slender fingers.

"There was always supposed to be two kings. No more, no less. Just one enemy king I had to worry about. " he sighed.

"Captain! There is nothing you can do about the other kings, and it's not your fault that there are new ones!" She exclaimed, sensing that he didn't mean in the game.

"It will be on me if innocent citizens suffer from the kings again." He retorted.

"You shouldn't feel responsible for kings other than yourself." She assured, "It's not all on you-"

"It always on me!" Roared Munakata as he sprung from his seat and slammed his palms into the table, the two kings trapped under his right hand.

Awashima added 'captain losing composure' to the uncharacteristically long list of things that startled her today.

Blinking once, Munakata sat back down, dropping the kings on the table.

"You can't compare life to a game." Whispered Awashima, breaking the tense silence.

"Seri... life is the biggest game of them all."
