That day the lodging house was bustling about, but I was sitting remembering the past. It should've been a happy occasion for me, I mean my best friend was returning from the refuge, but remembering what put him there in the first place made my heart ache with sorrow.
It was 1900 Race and I had set out to a poker game that I'd convinced him to come to. The night was going perfectly fine until Cheater started to deal, unfortunately he liked to live up to his name, but in my favor which also meant Race's favor. A boy caught up to Cheaters Cheating and of course started a fight, which brought the bulls to the fiasco. And Cheater blamed Race and told the bulls that he was a newsie, I never saw him again.
While I was sulking in the corner Cherry was screaming, "HE'S HERE!!! HE'S HERE!!!" I pulled my cap down even farther over my eyes and looked over at the door, there he was joking around, something seemed different about him, I just couldn't put my finger on it. When he looked around I could tell he was looking for me, the harder he looked the harder I resisted jumping up to greet him. As soon as he turned around I bolted for the bunks and began to cry, and started to fiddle with my caps collection when foot steps and a voice sent , " Did ya t'ink I wouldn't recognize ya? Come 'ere an give me a hug, Roller, I haven't seen ya in years an' this is how you'se greet me?"
I stood up and hugged Race while we laughed I said, "Wow, race you'se finally taller than me… I guess I needa start buyin' heels."
"Nah, just try not ta slump ovah when ya walk."
"I DO NOT SLUMP!!"
I spent a while chasing after him yelling, "I'm gonna get you'se Higgins." In the end we both plopped down on the couch, exausted, I still attempted to steal his hat but I fell on him. He looked at me, laughed, then kissed me… sending both of us into shock. Race and I steered clear of each other for the night confusing my friends.
