"Austri...Anneliese?", Daniel Héderváry poked his head into his wife's room. There sat Anneliese Edelstein, the personification of Austria, sitting with a ramrod-straight back. Dark rings adorned her eyes, but to Daniel, she was nevertheless beautiful.
"Hm? Yes, Hungary?" She turned slightly to him.
"Anneliese, do you love me?"
"Do I what?"
"Do you love me?" Daniel asked, entering the room.
"Do I love you? With Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Serbia in town, you're upset, you're worn out," Daniel winced at her tone.
"go inside, go lie down! Maybe it's indigestion..."
"Austria, I'm asking you a question...do you ..love me?"
"You're a fool!" snapped Anneliese.
"...I know. But do you love me?"
"Do I love you? For fifty-one years I've washed your clothes, cooked some meals, you'e cleaned my house, shared my land, ruled with you. After fifty-one years, why talk about love right now?" She said, not facing him.
"Anneliese, my dear, do you remember our wedding day?"
He gulped.
"I was scared."
"I was shy."
"I was nervous.."
"So was I."
He approaced her cautiously. "But both of our bosses said we'd learn to love each other, so now I'm asking, Anneliese, do you love me?"
"I'm your wife!"
"I know! But..do you love me?" He asked embracing her from the back.
"Do I love him?" She asked herself.
"For fifty-one years, I've lived with him, fought with him, starved with him. Fifty-one years, my bed is his, if that's not love, what is?" She turned and face him.
"Then do you love me?" He asked again, searching her eyes.
"...I suppose...I do."
"And I suppose, I love..you too."
It doesn't change a thing,
But even so,
After fifty-one years,
It's nice to know.
