Late Nights

He hated these long hours. It was 10:30 at night and he was still not finished with his work for the day. True it could wait until tomorrow, but he hated leaving things unfinished. 'Mary Anne will understand' he thought. Kevin smiled as he thought about his wife. She was always so supportive of what he did. Coming to New York, Joining this new firm. He hated how she spent so many nights alone. 'I'll make it up to her tomorrow' he thought with a smile. Maybe dinner, seeing a play, something to remind her of how much he loved her.

He turned his attention away from his beautiful wife and back to his work. There had to be some kind of loophole, something that would save his guilty client. It was amazing to hear the number of guilty people he had saved from jail time. When he first started out in law. It bothered him that he was letting guilty people go free. It never bothered him anymore. The people that he got off never got in anymore serious trouble. They learned their lesson. 'I shouldn't feel guilty about saving those people' he reasoned with himself. 'After their trials they all straighten up. I help them save themselves. it's a good thing'

"working late again Kevin?" He heard a familiar voice ask. It was John Milton. Kevin smiled. "I just want to finish what I'm working on that's all" You work to let it go and come out with me." " I don't know" Kevin answered The older mans eyes twinkled. "You know you want to" Kevin grinned. He could swear that man was telepathic. He always new what he was thinking, or what he was going to say. It was like they were connected somehow. "Alright." he heard himself say. "Let me call Mary Anne." Picking up the phone he dialed his apartment. "Mar its me. Listen, I'm not going to be home until late. I still have a ton to get done here. Don't wait up okay? I love you to. Bye" He hung up the phone and stood up. "were we going?"
