Burt stopped the car in the driveway and sighed rubbing his face with his worn hands. Kurt sat with his arms crossed fuming in the front seat. "Kurt, now you are being redic-." Kurt broke in shouting.
"You know what dad? I'm fucking GAY!" Kurt leapt from the car and slammed the door sprinting up the drive and into the house.
Burt sat shell shocked in his car.
Did his little boy just come out to him? The same little boy who asked for a pair of heels now felt like he should shout his feelings like they were something to be angry about, something to fight back with, something he couldn't tell Burt at dinner or at the shop. Burt just sat in the leather seats for several minutes, then he heaved himself up ripped the keys from the clanging ignition and slammed his own door.
He stormed into the house and took the stairs to Kurt's room two at a time. Then he shoved the door open. Kurt was sitting on his bed, his face pale and his eyes wide and terrified. Burt's chest heaved.
"Why?" he choked out. Kurt stared at him confused and frightened.
"What do you mean, 'Why'?" he asked bitterly. "Why did you tell me like that? Like you being gay was something that should be hurled at someone to end an angry fight. Why didn't you come to me with this sooner, far before you were bursting with the emotion and pain?" Kurt took a double take. "That's what you're angry about?" he asked softly.
Burt nodded. "I mean, come one kid! I've known you were gay since far before you did. You asked me if it was wrong for you to think boys were cute. You loved musicals, and when asked why it was because you loved hearing the male lead. You've always been gay, and I've had a long time to reconcile it. I love you Kurt, nothing is going to change that. Especially not how you are able to spread the love that I know is in your heart. If that love is given to another boy, then so be it, that's great as long as you are happy."
Kurt stared at his father. "I love you too dad." He whispered. "Good. Glad to hear it. Dinner will be ready in an hour. By the way, you're grounded." Burt said gruffly. Kurt's face changed. "What? Why?" he whined. "For your language earlier." Burt then turned around and headed back up the stairs, leaving behind a much loved and very much put upon son behind.
