This story is based on the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Selene usually enjoyed the reports on Luna, but today she was restless. As the thraumutage drawled on about the newest problem, population increase, her thoughts turned to more personal matters. Her new engagement.
She had just turned 16 a month ago. With that, her mother, Queen Channary, decided that it was time to find her daughter a husband. And of course, her mother knew exactly who she wanted her daughter to marry.
Prince Kaito of Eastern Commonwealth. She had seen him on the net, during public announcements and the such. He wasn't ugly, with copper brown eyes and sharp features, but he was not really her type.
The thing is, they had never met in real life. They had not talked, not even once. And though she may have seen him on the net, he had never seen her at all.
Channary spoke to the thaumaturge again, but Selene was barely paying attention. Her mother had made sure she was never seen on netscreens, even with a veil on. For what reason, she did not know. Once she had asked, and Channary glared at her and sent her to her rooms. Her mother loved her, in her own way, but she still didn't dare ask again.
Before she knew it, the reports were over. Queen Channary dismissed the courts. Then she turned to the rest of the royal family. "We will be leaving tomorrow morning for New Beijing. Be prepared."
As she left, she could feel Levana's glare on her back. Her aunt was jealous of her getting married to Prince Kaito. All Levana really wanted was power and freedom from her sister, Channary.
Her chambers were cold. All her clothes for her trip to earth were packed. She changed and snuggled into the blankets on her bed. After the wedding, she would return to Luna. She and Prince Kaito would visit each other a few times a year, but not more. Her mother said it was because they were both preparing to rule their countries when the time comes, but she felt it had more to do with Selene not getting attached to her soon to be husband and earth.
She didn't know if she should be glad or sad about her mother's' decision. Selene really felt that she shouldn't be getting married at all. In the back of her mind, there was that hope that maybe she would get a chance to fall in love on her own someday. So much for that.
