The Foot of the Stairs

The atmosphere in the Langston home was pregnant with nervous tension and deadly intentions. There was a pregnant woman on the second floor that was in the last grips of labor while outside a vicious mob of Returned had gathered demanding her presence. They wanted to kill her baby.

The foot of the stairs was the only logical place.

It was a tense situation. Rachel was in labor and there was a killing mass outside the Langston's home. Maggie didn't know whether to talk the pregnant woman through her contractions or stay downstairs and help fight the horde led by Preacher James.

The foot of the stairs was the only logical place.

Marty was alarmed not only about the Langston's and the very pregnant Maggie….he was still concerned with the town doctor and losing the part of his heart she resided in.

Marty had taken Maggie by the hand and was about to warn her about the Rachel situation, when Maggie asked, "What are you going to do?"

Seemingly out of nowhere and impulsively, she pressed her hands against Marty's cheeks pulling him into an unexpected kiss. Maggie smelled nice and she was warm and tender and how could Marty now melt? But the kiss! This was not the desperate "we're gonna die situation type of kiss" but rather a kiss that wasn't planned nevertheless, one that released all of Maggie's reserved emotions and frustrations. His lips were so soft and warm she almost sighed.

And it happened at the foot of the stairs.

Marty was totally caught off guard by Maggie's romantic gesture (did she really like him, like he liked her and was this actually happening?) but still he welcomed the warm lips pressing against his, so when Maggie broke the kiss and looked at him with those big eyes so full of intensity, he returned the kiss with a smile.

She kissed him once again and he was thrown totally off balance. With her palm on his chest, Maggie asked with anxiety, "You promise me that you'll be careful?"

That had to be the world's craziest question, "You promise me that you'll be careful?" Why not ask him to jump off a cliff? There wasn't anything Marty wouldn't do for his doctor!

"I promise." Couldn't she feel the thundering beat of his heart? Before he could say more, something was thrown through the Langston glass window and Fred was running into the foyer with his gun drawn. The emotional moment swung like a pendulum in the opposite direction. Now all of his feelings were intent on saving Maggie, Rachel and the Langston's.

As Marty pulled his gun and stood side by side with Fred, the strangest thought filled his head. What would it be like to have Fred Langston as a father-in-law? Before Marty could ponder further, there was a Preacher James mob to contend with.

At the foot of the stairs.

The End

A/NYes, it was short but it was my favorite scene in the finale and I just wanted to expand the kiss. What a super couple they could have been!
