Not So Long Ago

Saya looked around pub at the people there, and began to wonder.

"It wasn't that long ago that Kai and Riku and me helped Dad run this place…" she thought as she took a long look around the familiar room. Looking at all the faces, both familiar and new, she mused on her life. "How long ago was it? When I met Haji, lost Dad…found out what I am… How long ago was it that I helped Dad cook? Rode with Kai on his bike? Played video games with Riku? Now Dad's gone…and so is Riku…"

Her thoughts were interrupted by a little cry from one of Diva's daughters. Turning to the baby, she gave a small smile; they reminded her so much of Riku… What would their lives be like? Probably something like hers, with loving family and friends to help them… "If Diva had had one real friend, maybe things would be different…" Saya went into the kitchen and began to prepare a bottle for the child, and returned to her thoughts.

Things had changed, she had changed, no more the scared girl she was when all this began, she had become a determined young woman. "Two years ago, I'd never heard of Chiropterans, never knew I had a sister, and that I'd someday have to kill her… I'd never heard of Delta 67, never heard of the Schiff, or Cinq Flèches, I didn't know any of it, and now it's just normal to me…" She went outside and sat down on a chair. She thought back on all that had happened, all the people she'd met, the friends she'd made…and the ones that died. "They died because of me…Dad and Riku, Moses, Carmen, Irene, Solomon, Joel, possibly even Haji, so many people, gone forever."

"Saya, come inside, Lewis's gone through three helpings of ramen and he's asking for more!" Lulu called from inside the pub. Saya laughed quietly to herself. Despite all that happened, she still was so grateful that they stood by her, protected her, advised her and accepted her. "Yes, I've still got them, Kai, David and Julia, Lewis, Lulu, Mao, the twins, Akihiro, all of them, they're my family…" Lulu called again and Saya stood. She looked up into the night sky, and smiled, imagining her father and brother and all her fallen friends. They could be looking down on her now, smiling back at her, that was what she would imagine from now on when she looked at the stars. And maybe, just maybe, Haji was somewhere, looking up at the sky and thinking of her…Yes, so much had changed…

End.
