A/N: Woww okie so this is the prequel-ish thing to my first story, Playlist.(it's all in John's perspective, by the way) So, enjoy~
It was a typical friday for you; sat at home watching movies until five pm, then began to prepare for you date, then proceeded to go on said date. Despite the typical feeling, you noticed your girlfriend, Vriska, was acting rather peculiar. When she started to pick at her food you decided to speak up.
"Vriska, are you al-"
"John, I think we should break up."
"Wait, what?" Your eyebrows lower and your mouth goes from your usual dorky grin to a frown.
"Look, it's just not working out and I've already met someone else."
"Vriska…" you say softly, "I don't understand."
"It was fun while it lasted, but I just don't see us working out for much longer." She gets up and moves her hair out of her face. "Thanks for the food. I'll see you around school." And with that she saunters off out of the typical friday night diner, with her typical friday night dinner hardly touched, sitting in front of her typical friday night seat. Your eyes began to sting as you slowly raise your hand up to motion the waitress over, "Check please."
After paying you stumble out of the diner, hot tears threatening to pour from your heavy eyes. Snow begins to whisk all around you and you decide to walk around town square. After wandering around for what seems like decades, your eyes land upon a bright yellow sign that reads "Prospit Cafe". You'd heard of this place, everyone always talked about how good the coffee and the atmosphere was, but despite your efforts to go, Vriska always shot you down for some unknown reason. "Coffee would be nice." you say quietly to yourself. You head your way over to Prospit and are practically blown in on a gust of wind. Immediately when you get in your realize the place is almost completely empty, with the exception of a single person.
There's a short hispanic boy standing on one of the chairs and messing with the open sign. He looks over at you with a puzzled face. "Uh, hi." he boomed. Gee, for such a smaller person, he sure does have a loud voice.
"Um," you sniffle, "hi. Sorry are you closing up? I can leave if you are!"
"Well, I was." Shouty replies, switching the 'open' sign off, "But it seems like you could use some coffee and heating."
You give the boy the best smile you could possibly muster, although you're almost certain it just looks like you're trying to hide constipation or something. The boy puts on an apron and hops over the counter separating the kitchen and the dining area. "Have you been here before?"
"Uh, no, actually," you give him a chuckle, "but all my friends talk about how great this place is, so I figured might as well give it a try!"
"Bullshit. Come on, fuckass do you think I'm stupid?" The boy bellows, his dark brown hair falling before his...red eyes? Wow what a weird eye color. But you won't judge. It takes you a second to register that you were just called a fuckass, and that your sorrows were not hidden by your small talk and light laughter.
"E-excuse me?" you ask, taken aback.
"What's really going on?" Mr. Loud guy asks
And you gulp and look around nervously, "That obvious, huh?"
"Mhm. Do you know what kind of coffee you want?" He looks at you with a raised eyebrow
"Uh, caramel frappuccino."
"Are you serious? It's fucking snowing outside." He laughs at you and you nod at him, "Whatever you say. One caramel frappu-fucking-chino coming right up. So, back to the tears, if you don't mind me asking. What happened?"
"Oh, uh," You sigh and run your fingers through your messy raven hair, "My girlfriend just broke up with me."
"That's tough." The boy states, turning on the mixer.
"For another guy." you sniffle
"Even tougher, no need to get all teary eyed though. My ex left me a few weeks back for some douche named Dave fucking Strider. I mean what kind of bullshit name is that anyways." The boy grunts and you choke on your uvula or something.
"Oh." Your voice goes up a pitch. "Yeah, sounds totallllly lammeee." Dave would not be very happy if he found out you were calling him lame behind his back.
"And lucky for me," he turns around to you and places your frappuccino down in front of you, "I get the pleasure of seeing them here everyday. I'm Karkat, by the way. Karkat Vantas."
"John Egbert." you smile, "Sorry about your girlfriend, Dave can be a real dick sometimes."
"Sorry about yours." he says, lifting up a part of the bar and coming back out into the dining area. He sits down on one of the blue couches. You take your jacket out and sit on a chair opposite of him, "Do you go to my school?" Karkat asks
"Uh, yeah, probably."
"I've never seen you around."
"I don't do a lot besides piano and I'm in mostly advanced classes."
Karkat snorts, "That makes sense on why I haven't seen you."
"What do you do?" You cock your head to the side and look at the new person with wide eyes
"If you stop staring at me like that maybe I'll tell you."
You nod and bite your lip. "Well," Karkat says, "I don't do a lot of extracurricular things considering I work everyday. And I'm in regular classes."
"Oh, I see."
"Yep." Karkat pops his P. "So it sounds to me like you know Mr. Cool Kid, himself."
"Yeah," you laugh, "He's my best bro."
"Ah." Karkat says, "You know Terezi then, right?"
"Mhm." You reply, sipping your cold beverage, "You know, your name is kinda funny now that I think about it. Heh. Like you're a car and a cat." you laugh
"Real original. Not like I've heard that one a thousand times." he groans
You smile at him, "We should be friends, Karkat. You're pretty cool for a grumpy little guy."
You receive a throaty growl from your new found palhoncho. "Whatever."
You continued to talk throughout the night about movies, music, friends, school, and just about every topic you could think of. You didn't realize it was one in the morning until Dad calls you and demands to know where you're at and orders you to come home immediately. "I'm so sorry for keeping you out so late!" you sigh, "What do I owe you?"
"Don't worry about it." Karkat replies
You put your jacket back on and make your way to the door. "See you later Karkat."
"Yeah whatever." he replies
And you headed home to end your not-so-typical, but in a good way, friday night.
