Sired Slayer Series: Jennifer Longheart

(If you haven't read my story entitled The Sired Slayer you shouldn't read this story. It will make absolutely no sense to you at all. This is just a one-chapter short story that tells you a little bit about the new slayer and her background. Thank you for reading and please review when you are done so I can know what people think of my work.)

New York City in the winter can be quite rough on a young girl that is all alone with no money and no home. Jennifer Longheart sat on the rooftop of an old apartment complex and stared out at the horizon. A cloudless night sky that was full of glimmering stars, a gigantic yellow moon and dark smoke that was let out of one of the many chemical plants that littered the view.
She pulled her beanie down tighter over her ears and tightened her scarf to try and salvage any body heat that she gave off. The snow that fell all around her resembled flakes of white powder and it felt soft to the touch. The streets and rooftops alike seemed to glow with a lack of color and it reminded her that it was Christmas and she had no one there to say it to.
She had already told her watcher merry Christmas and he was more than happy to return the gesture, but of corse he told her that she needed to be out patrolling. So, she sat alone on the roof, waiting to see if some bloodsucker would try to make a meal out of someone that was full of turkey and alcohol. Drunken people couldn't have been considered fair game but vampires didn't care.
A scream was barely audible from down below in one of the streets so she began her descent to see what the source was. Sure enough it was a vampire that had attacked a young woman in her thirties. He did it right in the middle of the street which wasn't unheard of but it was uncommon. Just before he could sink his teeth into her and get a taste he felt the sting of a wooden stake enter his back and touch his heart.
An explosion of dust left the would-be victim very dirty but unharmed none-the-less. She looked at Jennifer with fear and confusion in her eyes and Mrs. Longheart just smiled and got to finally say what she wanted to the whole night.
"Merry Christmas", she said with a smile as she walked off into the darkness of an alley.
The same alley that she was going to be sleeping in that night. Her watcher got to stay in a hotel but he thought it would be better if she patrolled the entire night.
At least I'll get to go somewhere warm next. Sunnydale sounds like a warm place doesn't it?
She smirked at her own thought. It wasn't like she was leaving tomorrow but she had overheard that she was going to be needed in Sunnydale, California soon. Probably a year she thought. Sunnydale had been the city that Buffy the vampire slayer had lived when she got killed by that Glory girl. That's when Jennifer took up the slack in New York, learning the ropes so that when she got to the hell mouth she could handle it.
Little did she know what would happen in Sunnydale in the next few months to make her job harder than she could have ever imagined and an entire lifetime of fighting vampires in New York wouldn't change that.
