His foot slides silently across the floor, his toes dragging and his heel pressing to the floor, his back arches and his head flops forward. His hair is flattened, pressed against his skin by sweat, moulding to the features of his face which stare vacantly ahead.

He raises his knee; his foot extends before hitting the ground and sliding back under him. His body straightens- hips above feet, shoulders above hips, head above all – he is tall and strong, yet his fingers tremble. He turns his head to the right where he sees out the corner of his eye…her top lying on the railing. Unworn, cold, alone – waiting to be worn.

He turns his head away from it, his mind filling with images of the top clinging to her soft skin, his hands gently grazing her cheeks as she smiled up in delight at him. As his hands fell to her waist and pulled her into his arms as he spun her around.

He moves faster.

In his mind the sorrowful strains of a violin wreck his mind, her eyes wide with laughter, her face fresh with love and her skin soft with life. His head arcs back and his eyes reach the ceiling, darkness looks down over him, not a single light can illuminate how he moves. He places one foot in front of another, carefully balancing as in his minds eye her hands rest upon his waist supporting him.

His head flops forward again, his chin touching his chest, his hearts soundly beating below. He tries to swallow but his mouth and throat are hoarse, he gasps for air as his hearts begin to race, as his mind begins to wander – suddenly he's with her.

She falls into his arms, he catches her and spins her around the room. Laughter sweetens the air around them and soon they are lost in a world of their own. Soft sounds escaping their mouths as their feet move and their eyes wander, their smiles stretch as their hands meet and they dive and spin, safe in each others arms.

He raises his head one last time to look above him. There's nothing there. There's no one there. He closes his eyes and hears her whispers in his mind

'The world doesn't end because the Doctor dances'

He shudders as he knows her words are true

'Ah my love' he whispers softly in a voice that hasn't spoken in what feels like forever 'my Rose…how right you are. The world ended long before this' he chokes.

He slowly brings himself to his feet and looks around the darkened Tardis. No light has shone here since she left. She was his light. He swallows heavily again and takes a deep breath

And so he dances, he dances in the dark hiding from all that is lost, because in the dark, and because in his dance, she is beside him. She is in his arms, she is on his lips and she is against his skin. In his dance she never left. So he remains there alone – dancing in the dark.
