A/N: Yes, this is a Deathfic. Sigh. I am awful at keeping promises. I couldn't help myself. (Bangs head against wall) Why. Do. You. Do. This?! Whatever. Just… just here. Take this awful piece of garbage and my lame attempt at Hiccstrid. By the way, I'm betting that you didn't expect this person to die. The title is misleading. On purpose. Lol. This is a twist ending for what Defenders of the Wing Part II could be. Of course, this can't happen. You'll see why.
Warning: Spoilers for Race to the Edge Season 3 and a character death!
Queen Mala's sword went straight through Hiccup's chest. He crumpled to the ground, gasping in pain, as the riders gasped for another reason. Their fearless leader, the seemingly indestructible and incredibly lucky Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the third, was dead.
As soon as Hiccup's body hit the ground, Astrid moved. She was trained to ignore loss, pain, and sorrow to take out the enemy. She did exactly the opposite. Astrid collapsed to her knees at Hiccup's side and noiseless, disbelieving tears streamed down her face. Hiccup was still alive, sobbing breaths obviously paining him.
"A-astrid?" Hiccup's voice was faint. "I-I don't want to die like this."
Astrid choked, panic hitting her. "Oh gods, Hiccup, just stay still! We'll get help, we'll-"
"No, Astrid. That's… that's not what I meant. I'm not afraid of dying, I… I just… so many people are counting on me. Toothless needs me to help him fly. The dragons need me to fight Viggo for them. Dad needs me to carry on the Haddock line and become chief one day and… it's all over, isn't it? It's too late. I'm dying, there's… there's nothing that'll save me. A-and Astrid… I love you. So much. Take care of Toothless for me. Just like you promised at the final exam. It's easier, knowing you'll take care of everyone once I'm gone."
Astrid swallowed hard. "I will. I love you too, Hiccup. You know that."
Hiccup nodded, his body wracked with pain. "I know." He let out a breathy laugh. "It's strange, dying because of someone who believes in the same thing as me. Dying because I love dragons to someone who loves dragons as much as I do. Don't… don't kill Mala, Astrid. Take down Viggo, be allies with her."
Astrid shook her head tearfully. "Of course. Always worried about someone else. You big idiot."
Hiccup smiled. "Happy to be of service, milady."
Then his eyes, those forest green eyes that sparkled beautifully with wisdom beyond Hiccup's years, closed. The eyes that saw, analyzed, and loved everything…
Saw no more.
Hiccup's soul was like a dragon's, fierce and loving. However, his wings had been clipped and everyone knows that a downed dragon…
Is a dead dragon.
A/N: Short and bittersweet. I'M SORRY YOUNG JUSTICE FANS, I'M WORKING ON IT! I'll post soon, I'm trying. My phone got confiscated… again. Apparently I was on it too much. I'm just really psyched about the upcoming Batman's Clone story. And the I'm Here to Rescue You sequel. And No Darkness Without Light, the second part of No Light Without Darkness. Am I missing anything? Oh yeah, that Heir, Protege, or Apprentice story I'm planning. Jeez. I need to slow down a bit. And the sequel to Teen Titans Together, though that'll have to wait awhile. Ok, I'll stop. My workload is crazy. Oh, and the reason this little fic could never happen is because Hiccup is obviously in HTTYD2, making this heavily AU. Ok, now I'm done.
