Sam glances down at his cell phone for the tenth time in the last five minutes. He's not expecting any phone calls or text messages. His e-mail is only ever full of junk and spam. It remains silent, a constant reminder of just how distant from the world he and Dean really are. But he is still hoping for something, anything from Mary, his mom. Before she left the bunker for good, both he and Dean had given her their cell numbers in case she ever needed to get in contact with them. To all appearances, she's kept in contact with Dean through text messages, urging them both to continue to call her Mom and telling them she loves them. More recently, she and Dean have been playing Words with Friends. Yet throughout all of this, Sam's phone has remained strangely silent. Many times, he's been tempted to text her, just to say hi or tell her that she can talk to him about anything, but Sam just can't seem to bring himself to type the words and hit send.

The connection Dean has with Mary is one Sam feels they've had all along. His brother grew up with their mother for four years. Sam was just a baby when she died and never had the chance to develop a relationship with her. To say he's feeling a little left out is an understatement.

Once again, he looks at his phone and, decision made; he picks it up, fingers flying across the screen as he creates a text message. Once done, however, he sits there silently, thumb hovering over the send button. Would his text be as well received as Dean's or would his mother just brush it off and not respond? Swallowing the large lump in his throat, Sam pushes send anyway and drops the phone back on the table as if it burned him.

Since she left, Sam has been giving her space but, since their hug in her room after he told her that she filled a large hole in his life, he's wanted to connect with her on the same level as Dean. A few loud beeps announce that he has a new message. The lump in his throat returns as his shaking hand plucks it from the table and he forces his eyes to the screen. His first message reflects back at him.

Hey. Just wanted to say that I'm here. If you need to talk or anything.

His mother's reply is directly underneath and, as his eyes roam over the words, a burst of air escapes from his lungs in a loud rush.

Thank you, Sammy. I love you.

Sam fights back the moisture forming in the corners of his eyes as he continues staring at the response. He's transported back in time to his and Dean's first meeting with Gordon Walker, when Walker called him Sammy.

"He's the only one who gets to call me that."

The smug, proud look on Dean's face at the time was well worth it. Now though, Sam feels that it's time one other person has the privilege of calling him Sammy.

His mom.
