"Shy"
Ed had always called Alphonse 'shy', among other things, regarding the youngest Elric's aversion to any relationship that included the dreaded 'l' word. "Prude", "Asexual", "Hormone-less"…some of his classmates even called him the "Ice Prince Elric" behind his back.
That wasn't necessarily fair. Alphonse had crushes, and he most certainly had urges; he just wasn't loud about them, and didn't feel comfortable announcing them to an unwitting (and possibly unwilling) audience. After all, if he had told his brother that he had a crush on Winry's mom when he was six, or that he had an insatiable yearning for his seventh grade English teacher, or even that he had that infatuation with Alfons's gorgeous live-in nurse a few years ago...he wasn't really certain of the reaction he would get. 'Impossible' seemed to go hand-in-hand with 'Alphonse Elric' and 'romance', after all.
But as Al saw Mr. Mustang smile—not smirk—at him from across the classroom, he blushed awkwardly and smiled back at the silent promise, only understood between them.
And Edward could only stare.
