"Young Master, it is time to rise," I jolted at the sound of Tanaka's voice, hoarse with the stress of his newfound duties as Butler and Head Servant of the Phantomhive manor. I wasn't quite used to his voice pulling me from my slumber; it felt intrusive. I longed for the gentle, comforting sounds of China teacups tinking together as the morning blend was brewing, drapes being drawn to filter in the golden sunrise, and the soft rustling of newspaper as a certain midnight-clad figure prepared the morning routine. I would pretend to be asleep, just to catch a glimpse of his scarlet eyes, warm and welcoming. I would watch him like this, silently maneuvering around my room, almost ghost-like, until he felt my eyes on him and his expression went steely and guarded...

I was pulled out of my

reminiscence by Tanaka hesitantly pressing the warm cup of morning tea into my hands.

"Sorry," I said in a small voice, barely glancing at his face. "I wasn't paying attention." Tanaka's face twisted in sympathy, but he did nothing to break the awkward silence.

"Earl Grey, yes?" I asked as the aroma reached me. "Fortnum and Mason's?"

"Y-yes, my Lord."

I brought the warm china to my lips and took a small sip. It was too strong. I placed the cup back on the saucer with a small clink.

"I'm sorry," Tanaka said hesitantly. "It's not like his."

I felt tears sting in my eyes as they threatened to spill down my cheeks and betray the facade of strength I'd worked so hard to put on. I turned away from him and bit my lip.

"I'm sorry," he repeated awkwardly. I heard him shuffle across the room to the door and close it softly behind him. As soon as his footsteps faded down the hallway, I set the hot tears free, tumbling down my cheeks and wetting the feather duvet.
