Knowing and Understanding

Percy sat in Penny's bedroom staring at the photo of his family that he had found shattered in his trunk. The glass must have shattered as he was shoving his belonging in his trunk after his fight with his parents. Percy could feel Penny was watching him from the door. Neither she, nor her parents had asked any questions when he had shown up on their door step asking to stay with them until he found a place of his own. They just said yes, and allowed him into their home.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?" Penny asked as she moved further into the room and sat next to him on the bed.

"They basically called me a traitor to the family." Percy said.

"What? Why would they say that?" Penny asked shocked. Percy would never betray his family.

"Today Minister Fudge called me into his office. He said that the inquiry over the whole Crouch incident was completed. The found that there was no reason for me to believe that the letters I had received from Mr. Crouch were anything then legit, and that he was impressed at how responsible I had been in following directions. He offered me the position as his assistant." Percy said laying the photo off to the side.

"Percy that is amazing. I'm so proud of you." Penny said.

"I wish my parents felt the same way. They said that Minister Fudge just wanted me to spy on them, because of their connection and support of Professor Dumbledore and Harry. They said by taking the promotion, I was willing to spy on them, and I just sort of lost it with him. I know that there are some that respect Dad's opinion, but in my department, they think he is a crackpot. If he keeps talking about You-Know-Who being back, he is going to get himself fired. I told them that he didn't have to worry about me spying on the family that I would show my loyalty to the Ministry and make sure that everyone knew that I didn't belong to the family anymore." Percy said sounding tired he rested his head in his hands.

"Oh, Percy." Penny said.

"I thought they knew me better than that." Percy said.

Penny placed her hand under his chin and turned his head to look him in the eyes. "Knowing someone and understanding them are not the same. They may know you, but they don't understand you. They don't even try to understand you, and that is their loss. I have seen the way your siblings have treated you, and it isn't right. Especially the twins." Penny said she then slipped her hand into his.

"If I was to spy on them, I could have verified Fudge's theories about my father and saved my own neck much sooner." Percy said playing with the ring on her finger.

"Of course you didn't. You are always trying to protect your family. They just don't understand that is what you are doing. They just think you are trying to spoil their fun or make yourself look better." Penny said.

"I just want them all to be safe. It was always drilled in me that I would be safe if I followed the rules, so why is following the rules the wrong thing to do now?" Percy asked her.

"I don't know. We'll get past this, and you will eventually reunite with your family." Penny said kissing him. "I will be your family until then."

Percy kissed the engagement ring on her hand and then her lips. "I love you."

"I love you, too. So does your family, although they have a funny way of showing it at times." Penny said.

Percy just kissed her again knowing that is he didn't have Penny in his life right now, he would be lost.
