Hey guys, I'm back again with another fic. I got this idea while writing The Partner when I heard the spoiler for episode 2x16 and well I had to go with the idea. This fic will differ from the events on the show...mainly because I started writing it before Wednesday's episode and I have to say, writing it has been therapy for me so I hope reading it will do the same for you.
If I do continue this fic (that all depends on your feedback about this idea), I will probably only be posting one chapter a week as so far, my story plan has the chapters lasting between 3,000 - 4,000 words and there will be a lot of emotion involved in the writing (which always takes longer to convey).
This fic will be an new venture for me as if you read my fics before, you'll know I never write about Jay and Erin after they get together...mainly because I struggle to write happiness/romance. I am much better at the angst. However, this story will include flashbacks into their secret romance so it will kinda be a past/present fic.
Depending how things go, I may also develop an interactive element to the story where you guys decide the ending. It all depends on how you guys respond to specific characters.
I'd love for you to read and review so I know if this idea is worth continuing. Thanks!
Tell Him – The Concept
Jay and Erin have enjoyed their secret romance for a few months but when it seems like Voight has discovered their secret, everything seems to fall apart. Jay wants to come clean; Erin however, thinks they should just 'cool off' their relationship until Voight is less suspicious. Jay, deciding this is a sign that ultimately Erin will never choose him over Voight, decides to leave Intelligence for a while, signing himself up to protect a medical team of Doctors Without Borders in Syria.
Although hurt, Erin hopes creating some space between them will help Jay to understand her situation and hopefully, will also change Voight's mind regarding in house romances. However, when Jay returns, Erin soon discovers that sometimes distance doesn't make the heart grow fonder because Jay's back and he's engaged!
This story will be told both in the present as Jay prepares to get married and the past, as we flashback to when Jay and Erin had their secret romance. Will Erin stop Jay before he gets to the altar or has she missed her happily ever after?
Prologue
Erin sat in the coffee shop, her eyes focused on her partner, both in work and in the bedroom, trying to take in what he was saying. She looked at his hand, lightly gripping his coffee cup. She reached forward to touch his hand but he quickly pulled it out of her reach.
She gave a small laugh. "Jay, relax...Voight doesn't know about this place." She soothed; knowing this was their 'go to' place for their weekend brunch; were they could act like a couple, knowing they wouldn't bump into anyone from their district.
"He could have followed us." Jay quickly retorted, running his hand through his hair.
"Jay..." She laughed again.
"Erin, you didn't see the look in his eyes when I left the break room..." Jay stated. "...he knows."
"Jay!" Erin laughed; reaching out and taking his hand in both her hands; not giving him the option to pull away. "If Voight knew what you've been doing with me, you wouldn't be sitting here. You would be in Chicago Med."
"Like that reassures me..." He muttered.
"Hey, you knew the risks." She teased, smiling.
Jay gave a small smile and leaned over, placing his free hand over both of Erin's hands, his thumb gently grazed her hands. "Maybe we should just tell him." He suggested. "I mean, it's been a few months..."
Erin quickly pulled her hands free and slumped back on her chair; her eyes focused on her own coffee cup as she lifted her finger to trace the rim. "No, no...we can't!" She protested.
"Erin..." Jay sighed.
She looked up at him. "Jay, he'll be so hurt that I lied to him...he'll transfer the both of us!" She tried to reason.
"This is exactly why I wanted to tell him when this first started!" Jay exclaimed with frustration.
"Excuse me?" Erin questioned.
"I did say that he'd respect us if we were upfront but no, you didn't think anyone needed to know about our personal lives." Jay retorted.
"And I then told you we could tell Voight if you wanted and you decided against it." Erin replied.
"Yeah, well I wasn't exactly thinking with my brain at that moment in time." Jay shot back. "I mean you...well; you were you and we were pretty busy taking off each other's clothes..."
Erin shook her head and sat up. "Jay, we're not sure he even knows about us." She stated. "I mean, he hasn't said anything, all we have is one look..."
"Erin, I know the look...he knows!" Jay quickly retorted.
"Maybe he's just suspicious." Erin reasoned. "I mean, we have been pretty sloppy lately...Ruzek nearly caught us holding hands."
"All the more reason to tell him." Jay shot back.
"Or maybe we just cool things off for a while..." Erin replied. "...just until he stops suspecting us."
"And what's that going to achieve Erin?" Jay asked.
"It'll give us a little breathing space...to figure out what this is." Erin replied.
"I thought we already knew what this is." Jay retorted. "I mean, it sure sounded like that when you were considering Wisconsin."
"I said it was a nice thought Jay...I didn't say it was a plan." Erin quickly stammered back.
Jay shook his head. "You know what? Maybe us taking a break is a good idea." He stated; his hand reaching into his pocket to pull out some cash.
"I said we need to cool things off for a while...not break up!" Erin exclaimed, her eyes watching Jay as he stood up, pulling on his jacket.
"And when we finish our 'cooling off' period and get back together, what are we going to do the next time Voight gets suspicious?" Jay asked; his eyes on Erin.
"I...I...I don't know!" Erin stammered; fighting back the tears filling her eyes, threatening to spill.
"I can't live my life on pause Erin just because you don't want to risk hurting Voight..." Jay replied, tossing money onto the table. "...I won't." He walked out of the coffee shop.
Erin didn't dare turn to watch him go; she hung her head; focusing on the cup in front of her; her fingers delicately reaching up to her eye to wipe away a stray tear that broke free.
To be continued...if you want me to?
