1 Chapter 3
And so it was. They headed out toward the mountain, and they journeyed many days, hunting for food and gathering water from streams. At last, they made it to the mountain. The dragon's lair was standing there in front of them. The dragon was sleeping. David's eyes narrowed suspiciously. "The dragon knows we're here. Dragon's only snore when they're awake and acting like they're sleeping." Xzan acknowledged his thought with a nod.
They walked up to the lair, David spinning the greatsword around his hands expertly, Xzan gripping his Dwarven Urgosh tightly. They entered the dark cave slowly, their eyes adjusting to the light. They advanced forward slowly, the dragon sitting there motionless. When they got close enough, the black dragon stood quickly. David and Xzan jumped back, startled. Catryn roared brutally and breathed fire of death at the ceiling. David ducked out of the way and Xzan advanced on Catryn.
Xzan swung his Dwarven Urgosh violently at the dragon, but the dragon quickly defended the blow and knocked Xzan down, breaking his weapon in half and knocking it away. "Good thing I came prepared, Xzan thought", and he readied his heavy mace. The dragon got ready to blow fire and disintegrate Xzan, but he had forgotten about David. David took his greatsword in both hands and swung mightily at the dragon's backside. The dragon's back was slit down the middle and the dragon thundered a blood- curdling scream, as he swung around to hit David. David turned to run, but was gashed with the dragon's mighty claws. The dragon then turned back to Xzan, who had just thrown a potion to David. The dragon's claws burned a ret-hot, and then slashed at Xzan.
Xzan's burnt body flew across the room, and Catryn went back to work on David. David had taken the potion, and his wounds were mostly healed. When Catryn swung around to meet David, he countered with a blow to the dragon's fleshy stomach. Catryn was too quick for this maneuver, and struck David's head with his strong tail. David flew to the wall with a violent crash, but unfortunately for the dragon part of his tail was severed.
The dragon roared and blew fire about the ceiling in a mad fury. Xzan had come behind him, his mid-arm muscles dangling down his arm, his hand and upper-arm muscles intact. He had his two-bladed sword in his hand, and he dove at the dragon with his last ounce of strength. He severed Catryn's head, but not before he was burnt to a crisp by his flames.
While the dragon was regenerating, it gave David a moment for stratagem. He took the quart of poison, threw down his greatsword and pulled out the Dwarven Waraxe, held it away from his body, and poured the rancid poison on the blade. He saw the bubbles of the poison on the steel start to form. By this time Catryn had fully regenerated, and David quickly dove toward the dragon's stomach while it was unaware.
Catryn came crashing down to the ground, throwing David off of him and his greataxe out of the cave. David climbed to the dragon's head while the dragon was weak, took out his rapier, and stuck it in the throat of Catryn, killing him. He took some gold, and a Demon Armor (which was Xzan's family trademark), and left the cave bloody and beaten, throwing Xzan's body off of a cliff.
