Author's Note: Hello again! Today is Mello's 20th birthday, and I already wrote my MelloxMatt tribute. However, I also wanted to do something for Mello's birthday in honor of the MelloxNear fans as well. I hope I did this pairing justice, at least on some level!
Cupcakes seem to be a running theme in my birthday stories, haha.
Anyways, please enjoy! This is also a sort of experiment, because I don't ever write like this. Please forgive me if it didn't turn out very good. ^_^
I don't own Death Note, Mello, Near, or cupcakes, sadly. Oh well.
If you want to read my MelloxMatt birthday story, go check out Precognitions. It's dark and edgy, and there are no cupcakes.
Thanks for reading! Please leave reviews. They're loved and appreciated.
Every year, on December 13, a chocolate cupcake was left outside Mello's door.
Every year, Mello tried to figure out who it was.
Every year, he failed to solve the mystery.
Every year, the cupcake was there without fail.
Every year, someone could be seen sneaking away early in the morning, before the other children had woken up.
Every year, the kids got a little older.

Mello grew up.
Mello left.
Mello always wondered who it had been.
Mello always remembered that someone had cared.
Mello gained everything.
Mello lost everything.
Mello continued on.
Mello needed help, though he wouldn't admit it.
Mello went to visit Near, the one person he always thought he hated, and thought hated him back.
~*~
Near invited Mello in.
Near didn't fight.
Near didn't argue.
Near didn't respond to Mello's harsh voice.
Near waited until Mello was done yelling to stand up.
Near picked something up off the table and kept it hidden.
Near walked over to Mello.
Near held out a chocolate cupcake.
Near gave Mello his small, half-smile.
Near moved up on his tiptoes.
Near pressed his lips to Mello's for half a second.
Near pulled away, and waited.
~*~
That day, Near finally revealed himself.
That day, Near showed his feelings.
That day, Mello understood.
That day, Mello stopped hating Near.
That day, Near stopped hiding.
That day, Mello stopped seeking.
That day, they learned about love.
