The rumours regarding Sam's sexuality had been spreading like wildfire in the church he attended. Not all churches frowned upon homosexuality, but there were a large amount which did, and unfortunately, Sam's was one of them. He wasn't gay, he wasn't, but nobody believed you even if you said you weren't. This wasn't even juicy gossip they were talking about, they would effectively make sure he couldn't come to church anymore, or even try to de-gay him. His family had heard the rumour too, but they knew to label it lies and slander.
Sam wasn't gay, but he wasn't straight either.
That part he was absolutely certain. He had been in love with Quinn once, and never did he believe it to be a waste or meaning nothing; he had been attracted to her, he was still attracted to women, always had been and always would be. Though, it still hit him hard in the face when he realised he was in love with a boy.
Quinn had heard the rumour too, of course she had. She was a member of the same church and she had declined it as much as she could; she would hear members behind her back saying "Poor girl, she had no idea." And no, she had no idea because there was no idea to even think of, to not doubt her relationship with Sam. She had ruined it, if anything he had been loyal and faithful and loving. She had been the adulterer; she should have been the one who was having gossip spread around her church.
Though, to be honest, that had happened to her when she was pregnant. Maybe she didn't need it again.
The church was having a charity ball, and Sam wasn't sure if he had done the right thing. Quinn seemed to be fine with it and even smiled when he asked. Quinn wore a white dress, as if she was a bride and Sam a black and white tux, as if he was the groom.
"I've never been a guy's beard before, it's quite exciting." Quinn whispered as she and Sam swayed to the music on the dance floor along with other couples, mainly old couples, as the rest of the church stared at them happily; glad that Quinn was earning her modest, chaste reputation back and that Sam didn't look gay. Sam had realised that if he used Quinn as his beard, the rumours may go away and the church would see; look, I'm dancing with a girl and you can see I'm attracted to her. Okay, so the last part was a lie, he wasn't attracted to Quinn anymore, but at least he had patched things up with her, at least things had smoothed over and he could happily carry a conversation with her.
Quinn, however, was thinking otherwise. She never stopped being attracted to Sam. Yes, she had cheated on him for all the wrong reasons though there are never any right reasons to cheat. She had been foolish, and she really realised this as she looked up at Sam's clear blue eyes. He was so beautiful. It was a slow song and they swayed to the music gently, not taking their eyes of each other. For a moment, just a moment, there was a slight flicker of hope in maybe they would fall in love again. But just as the moment quickly arrived, it diminished as Quinn's phone made a noise; it was a text from Finn, she had forgotten to tell him where she had been going that evening. Sam blinked a few times and looked down at the floor, before pulling Quinn's phone out of his pocket from where he had been keeping it for her.
"It's Finn. I should probably call him just to tell him I'm at church. Don't go anywhere." She smiled, before walking outside to receive a better signal. Sam nodded but moved away from the dance floor; he wasn't going to stand there looking alone.
Sam pulled out his own phone from his own pocket as it rang silently; the screen reading 'Kurt'. He smiled at it, before answering with "Hey, I've missed you."
