Boyd Langton hung up the phone. It wasn't the morality of the thing that had upset him. He already sold his soul for this power. It was the trickiness of the situation. To make a demon appear human, and then erase its memories. To capture the sister of a slayer. This was so not in his job description.

A representative from Wolfram and Hart was on his way with Illyria. The other girl, Caroline, they had told him on the phone, would find her way to him.

"Huh. She's blue," Topher mused as Adelle helped him lay the tranquilized Illyria in the chair.

"There are some things in this world that we just shouldn't question," Adelle responded. "Now, tie her down and let's see if we can make her unblue, shall we?"

Topher and Adelle waited for nearly an hour, but finally some groans could be heard from the chair. "Where am I?" Illyria shouted. "What's going on? Let me go!"

Adelle grabbed Topher by the arm before he crossed the threshold from his office to the imprinting room and whispered, "Remember the story. She's highly intelligent, Topher. Do not try anything stupid."

"Okay, jeez," Topher responded, pulling out of her grasp. "You have, like, zero faith in me."

"Tantrums again," Adelle said as she made her way toward the struggling demon. "Give her an injection, please."

"Who are you?" Illyria demanded. "What am I doing here?"

Topher filled a syringe with the drug given to them by the man Rossum sent to deliver their newest active. He said it would confuse her enough to convince her she was human. After that, they would be able to wipe her.

"I am your doctor, Winifred," Adelle answered. "You know that. And you are in isolation because you have assaulted one of the other patients. Please sit still."

"What doctor? What are you talking about? Ow!" Topher pulled the needle from her arm and taped a small bandage where he had injected her. "I'm not Fred, I'm Illyria."

Adelle sighed. "She's still having delusions, Dr. Brink. We should look into some different medications for her."

"What else can we do for her?" Topher asked. "She's been here for months and we've given her every drug we can think of. And who knows what her doctors were giving her before she arrived here? Maybe this one's just a lifer. Crazy and can't be helped, you know."

"I know," Adelle said. "But what will we tell her parents?"

"Months?" Illyria whispered to herself.

Nearly two days passed. Adelle had put all engagements on hold, since Illyria was occupying the chair. Topher continued to drug her and pretend she was a long-term mental patient at a medical research facility until she finally broke down. She admitted to being Fred Burkle, and Adelle declared a breakthrough. She talked to her for an hour, playing psychologist, as Illyria confessed to traumatic experiences leading to a fantastical life of demon-slaying delusions. Adelle and Topher stared in awe as the blue in her skin began to dissolve.

"I am Fred," Illyria declared, tears in her eyes.

"That's right," Adelle confirmed. The demon's skin was now completely normal, and the streaks in her hair had become brown. They watched her eyes change color. "Now we're going to run a scan on your brain to be sure you're doing better. Is that alright, Winifred?"

"Yes," Illyria sighed. "Then can I see my parents?"

"Of course," Adelle said. "Now I want you to relax. Lie back in the chair, please, and Dr. Brink will start the scan."

Topher and Adelle untied her hands. Topher stared at Illyria as she was wiped and then imprinted. This was something he'd never seen, and he wasn't sure if it was going to take. Then the chair raised up and she opened her eyes. "Hello," Topher said. "Whiskey?"

"Did I fall asleep?"
