Return of the Best
Chapter 1: A Surprise of Change.
In the well known region of Kanto lies Pallet Town, a quiet little place and home of the famous Prof. Samuel Oak.
At a house near the humble town lounging on a chair swing was a young teenage boy with raven messy hair and a red cap lying on the side of him.
This was Ash Ketchum and laying next to him was a yellow mouse with a lightning bolt tail. "Sure does feels good to be home don't it buddy?",Ash asks the mouse.
"Pikachu.",Pikachu nods sighing.
Ash had decided to take a break from traveling after his most recent adventure in Kalos. He had just finished competing in the Kalos Lumiose Conference and managed to win 2nd place.
"Pikapi? Pikachu?" Pikachu asks.
"I don't know buddy we've competed in every league. That's out there." Ash said.
Right as they took a break from traveling, they were also stumped on where their next adventure awaits them.
"Maybe we can go visit some of our old friends." Ash suggests. Pikachu thought about it. It had been some time since they've seen or heard of their old friends.
Ash remembers when he traveled with Misty and Brock in Kanto and Johto. Then when he traveled with May in Hoenn and Dawn in Sinnoh.
"Yeah..",Ash said out loud. "We should do that." Ash got up and headed to his room on the dresser by his desk he notices half a ribbon laying against a picture.
He sees himself when he was younger old friends. Ash then laid his eyes on a brown hair girl wearing a red bandana and held into the ribbon.
Ash smiles as he picks up the ribbon. "I wonder what she's up to?" Ash then had a flashback to his time in the Hoenn Region.
During his travels he had gotten close to May as she tried to become a Pokemon Coordinator. When they first she didn't like Pokemon, but later on as they travel she absolutely loved them, so that made Ash become her teacher. As they traveled together the two of them started to become less teacher and student and became close. Plus May was just like Ash when he started out. She made some rookie mistakes, but learned from them.
When their time together was coming to an end May convinced Ash to enter a Pokemon Contest with her, they both made to the final match where they tied for first resulting in the two of them cutting the ribbon in half so they would always remember their travels.
Ash looks at another picture and sees a girl with black hair and a white hat.
"Dawn.",he said to himself smiling. Dawn was an old friend of Ash during his time in the Sinnoh region. She too was a beginning trainer, but she was also a Pokemon Coordinator. Like with May he had helped her learn the skills needed to become a Pokemon trainer. She was always there to comfort Ash whenever he was down in the dumps with her all time catchphrase, "No need to worry!" Not to mention in all his battles she was always there to cheer him on to victory.
How he missed both coordinators.
"What I would give to travel with either of them again." Ash sighs.
Pikachu hops on his shoulder and agreed with him. "Cha.",he sighs. He missed those two as well.
Picking up the half ribbon Ash puts it in his pocket before leaving.
He walks downstairs to see his mother Delia, who had brown hair in a ponytail wearing a pink shirt and blue blouse watching television with a mime looking Pokemon, a Mr. Mime.
"Hey Mom, Mr. Mime." Ash said.
"Mime Mime Mime." Mr. Mime smiles.
"Are you OK sweetie? Because you have a look on your face that means you're in deep thought.",Delia asks looking at her son.
"I miss my friends and I right now I have no idea what to do." Ash said.
"Well why not visit them? That doesn't sound like a problem?",Delia asks.
"It's not just that mom, I've been in every league in every region. I need something to do.",Ash said.
"Well how about you redo one of the regions you've already done?" She suggests.
That made Ash's and Pikachu's eyes widen. "R-Redo a region?"
"Yeah if you've done it once why can't you do it again I'm sure they'll let you." Delia said.
"Well..",Ash thought about it. "It doesn't sound like a bad idea. I could retry a region, heck I could try again at the leagues."
"And since you've been all to them you know how to prepare for them."
Ash nodded and turned to his partner. "What do you think Pikachu? Up to retrying a region?"
"Pikachu Pika." Pikachu nods.
"Well it's offical.",Delia said and stood up. "Now all you have to do is figure out which of the 6 region leagues you want to retake?"
Ash paused to think about that. His record with Leagues wasn't a very good streak.
In Kanto, he ended up in the Top 16, he didn't even want to think about how embarrassing that was.
In Johto, it felt like it was the same except he only gotten a rank higher and finished in the Top 8, because he'd rely only on two Pokemon too much, Charizard and Pikachu.
In Hoenn, he made the mistake of only using the Pokemon he caught there and he wound up in the exact spot: In the Top 8.
In Sinnoh, he gotten surprisingly better, Ash decided to use a mix of his old and new Pokemon and it made him go farther into the league...but that stopped in the semi-finals when he faced Tobias and 2 legendary Pokemon who destroyed his team. Earning him the Top 4.
However, once he got to Unova he went right back to using Pokemon he only got in the region and he was humiliated when he lost in the Top 8 to a trainer who had thought a full battle meant using 5 Pokemon.
Finally Kalos, he had HUGE improvement! All of his Pokemon were fully evolved (minus Pikachu), he gotten more serious in his training and battling, and though he only used Pokemon in that region alone, he gotten better and made to the finals in the first in his life.
'I did pretty good in Sinnoh and Kalos, maybe I'll go for the regions I didn't do so well in.' Ash thought.
Kanto: where it all began, Johto: not all that has changed, Hoenn: Where the whole "using Pokemon in that region" started, or Unova: where Ash thought he did terrible in.
"Hey Pikachu...how do you feel about going to Hoenn?" Ash asks.
Pikachu thought for a second and thought why not. "Chu.",he nods.
"But this time we're gonna do this right. Let's head up to Prof. Oak's and get a team ready." Ash said. Pikachu nods and jumped onto Ash's shoulder.
"Mom, we'll back later."
Ash runs out the door and Delia chuckles. "Same old Ash, always in a hurry."
That's when an idea came inside Delia's head. "Mimey, come with me I need to pick up some supplies." Delia said standing up.
"Mime?",Mr. Mime was confused, but obliged.
Heading up to Prof. Oak's lab at the top of the hill Ash reached the front door and rang the bell.
"Coming!", a voice was heard and opened the door was a tall male with black hair covered in a headband. "Hey Ash, what's up?"
"Hey Tracy, is Prof. Oak here? I wanted to talk to him about something?" Ash asks.
"Yeah come on in.",Tracy lets Ash inside the building. He leads him into a room where he sees an old man with a lab coat talking to another man in a lab coat with brown hair and a beard.
"Once again Prof. Birch, I thank you for letting me examine this Keystone and Mega Stone.",Prof. Oak said holding two marbles. One large one and one small one.
"It was no trouble at all Prof. Oak, granted I'm not as fluent in the study of those things as our friend Prof. Sycamore but hopefully you'll have better luck." Prof. Birch said.
"I might.",Oak said looking at them. Then heard a voice.
"Hey Prof.!"Both Oak and Birch saw Tracy walk in with Ash and Pikachu.
"Well if it isn't Ash and Pikachu. Long time no see." Prof. Birch smiles.
Ash's eyes widened. "Hey Prof. Birch, it's good to see ya. How've you been?",Ash asks smiling.
"Been busy, you know me Ash I always need to be out and about." Prof. Birch said.
"Still doing field research?",Ash asked.
"Yep that's actually why I'm calling. I found those on my latest research expedition." Prof. Birch said hinting to the Mega Stone and Key stone.
"Woah, a Mega and Keystone?",Ash gasped.
"Just like the ones you saw in Kalos." Prof. Oak said.
"Which Pokemon is the Megastone for?" Ash asks.
"It's for Charizardite, but unfortunately I don't have a Charizard and don't know anyone who has one.",he answers.
"Well that's where you're in luck Prof. Birch because I do." Prof. Oak smirks.
"Really who?" Prof. Birch asks when Prof. Oak and Tracy both point to Ash.
"Ash? You have a Charizard?",Birch asks
Ash nods. "Yeah I do. He's here at the lab."
"Perfect, run and bring him over I want to see the Mega Evolution." Prof. Birch said excited.
Ash nods and runs outside to the ranch where he sees multiple Pokémon roaming around. He whistled. "Charizard!"
A loud roar echoes from the ranch as an orange dragon like Pokemon flew in towards him.
Charizard landed in front of his trainer. "Good to see you buddy, listen I gotta ask you. Ever heard of Mega Evolution?",Ash asks. Charizard tilts his head not sure what that was.
"Well basically if this works you could way more powerful than all those years you spent training in the Charicific Valley." Ash said getting his attention.
Charizard grunted saying he wanna see this."Follow me." Ash said as he and Charizard made their way into the lab.
"Alright Ash you put on the Keystone while you give Charizard the Megastone." Prof. Oak said.
Luckily the key stone that Birch had came with a Mega Ring. Ash puts Keystone in the mega ring while Charizard hold on to the mega stone.
"Alright ready Charizard?" Ash asks as he nods. "Charizard Mega Evolve!" Ash said tapping his keystone and a bright light engulfs Charizard. When the light faded away he had three horns on his head, wings on his arms and his wings had ragged edges.
Everyone in the room was in awe. "A-Amazing...",Oak gasped.
"That's the power of Mega Evolution..",Tracy was astonished and he started sketching.
"This is amazing!",Birch said amazed while Ash and Pikachu were shocked and dumbfounded.
"Wow that's...wait a minute.",Ash looks at Charizard. "It's different.""Well apparently in terms of Mega Evolution Charizard has two forms. The one you battled in the Kalos League is Mega Charizard X, this one is Mega Charizard Y." Prof. Oak said.
"Mega Charizard Y...",Ash said silently amazed. "Charizard, how you feel?"
Charizard looks at himself and roars signalling he felt amazing.
"I bet Charizard feels stronger than in the past.",Tracy commented still sketching. Suddenly the sun's ray started to grow brighter as it lined up with Charizard.
"What's going on and why does if feel hotter all of a sudden?" Tracy asks.
"I believe that is Charizard's new ability, Drought.",Birch said.
"It greatly increases the power of fire attacks and decreases water attacks." Prof. Oak said.
"Woah..that's amazing!",Ash was in awe.
"Pika!",he agreed.
"Well Prof. Birch did you see what you wanted to see?" Prof. Oak asks.
"And more." He smiles. Charizard then glowed as he returned to his former state.
"Oh man with this imagine how far I'd get in a league." Ash said looking at the Keystone.
"You really like they Keystone don't you Ash?",Brich asks. Ash nods.
"Yeah, it's my time using one of these and experiencing Mega Evolution for myself."
"Well how about a deal. If you help me and Prof. Oak study them I'll let you keep it." Prof. Birch said surprising him.
"S-seriously?!",Ash exclaimed.
"Interesting idea, this way we can learn about Mega Evolution through first hand experience." Prof. Oak said.
"What do you say Ash? You to have your own evolved Pokémon?",Birch asks.
"What do you I say? Absolutely." Ash grins.
"Then it's settled. The Keystone and Mega stone are yours.",Birch said smiling.
"Yes! Hoenn League here I come!"
"The Hoenn League?",they looked at him confused.
"Ash didn't you already competed in Hoenn 3 years ago?",Tracy asked.
"Well that's why I originally came up here for. I've decided to try my luck at redoing the Leagues I didn't do so well in and my first stop is Hoenn." Ash explains.
This surprised them all of them. "W-wow Ash this is extremely new.",Prof. Oak said.
"Yeah, I thought you would just go to a new region soon?",Tracy said.
"I would, but the only region left is Alola and it doesn't have a league." Ash said.
"I see. So you're planning to have a new start?",Oak asks.
"Yeah, but this time I need to get a team ready. I'm not making the same mistake twice." Ash said.
Now this was even more surprising to them all. Instead of just bringing Pikachu to a new region, Ash wanted to bring more Pokémon.
"Wow Ash you're really dedicated to winning the league this time." Prof. Oak said.
"Because this time I plan to win." Ash said determined.
"Well then...go for it.",Prof. Birch said and they got his attention. "If you're wanting to come back here and retake the league, you're welcomed to do so."
"I will Prof. Birch I plan to leave for Hoenn as soon as I can." Ash said.
"Understood. Well it was talking with you Samuel, and good to see you again Ash. Take extra care of those stones and I'll see you in Hoenn.",Birch said before the screen went to blank.
Walking back out to the ranch Ash looked to see all his Pokemon spread out everywhere.
'Now who should I take with me?' Ash thought.
His Pokemon besides Pikachu and Charizard, consisted of a Bulbasaur, Muk, Kingler, 30 Tauros (Which he only used the ring leader), Snorelax, Heracross, Bayleef, Quilava, Totodile, a shiny Noctowl, Donphan, Swellow, Sceptile, Corphish, Torkoal, Glalie, Staraptor, Torterra, Infernape, Buizel, Gliscor, Gible, Unfeazant, Oshawott, Snivy, Pignite, Scraggy, Boldore, Leavanny, Talonflame, Hawlucha, and finally Noivern.
After much thinking Ash chose Snivy, Corphish, Gible, Noctowl and Gliscor.
He then decided on switching Pokemon now and then so everyone could get some more experience.
As the sun was setting Ash made his way back home to see Delia sewing something on the couch.
"Hey mom, I'm back.",he said. "Are you making clothes?"
"Just thought I'd pick up some for you on your new journey." Delia said holding up a new jacket.
"Hm. Looks nice.",Ash liked the detail.
Trying on the clothes he had black and blue jacket, a black t-shirt, gray pants and red and black hat and a blue Pokeball design. He had on gloves that looked similar to the ones he had in Hoenn.

"How I look?",Ash asks.
"You look amazing Ash." Delia smiles as Mr. Mike walks over with his backpack.
"Thanks Mr. Mime.",Ash said. "You know...it dosen't hurt to store up just in case."
"Mime Mime." He nods in agreement. Ash decided to head to Viridian City and stock on items.
As he entered Route 1 Ash took the time to admire the forest when a flock of Pidgey and Pidgeotto flew over his head.
"Pidgey and Pidgeotto...",he looks up and sighs. "Brings back memories of an old friend."
Ash flashbacked to the past when he was 11 years old and he once had a Pidgeotto, but soon a Spearow flock and a Fearow, the same ones from the first day of his jourey appeared and attacked him. Thus making Pidgeotto evolve into a Pidgeot and defeating Fearow and Ash released her in order to protect the forest.
Once the flashback was over Ash looks down. 'Wonder where she is? Or did she forget about me?'
Walking along the river Ash stops at the waterfall overlooking the forest when a large shadow flies over him.
"Huh?",he looked up.
Looking up he saw a flock of Spearow scrambling everywhere when suddenly from the clouds a loud call echoes from them.
"Pidgeo!"
Almost instantly all the Spearow calm down. Ash's eyes widen in shock as he sees descending from the skies a Pidgeot.
"P-P-Pidgeot?",he stuttered.
Pidgeot flew towards the Spearow and gestured to a section of forest.
"Pidgeot Pidg Pidgeot." She said indicating where they should be flying.
"SpearSpearowSpear.",one of them screeched. Pidgeot glares at them and all the Spearow flinch before they flew off in the direction she pointed.
"Wow...she really is the protector of this forest.",Ash said. He was proud of her.
Pidgeot was about to fly away until she looked down and saw a figure near the river. Pidgeot's eyes widen in shock as the figure is revealed to be her old trainer.
"P-Pidgeo?",she flew down and was in front of Ash. "Pidgeot?"
Ash smiles widely and shed a tear. "Hey Pidgeot..it's me."
Pidge...Pidgoet!" Pidgeot smiles as she wraps her wings around him.
Ash hugs her. "I missed you so much Pidgeot!",he said choking.
"Pika Pika Pikachu." Pikachu smiles at his old friend.
"Pidgeo!",Pidgeot rubbed her head to Pikachu's.
"It's so good to see you again. I mean look at you." Ash smiles.
Pidgeot looked abit larger than before.
"I guess all these years of protecting the forest really made you stronger." Ash said.
"Pidgeot." Pidgeot nods.
"How are the Pidgey and Pidgeotto?",he asks.
"Pidgeot Pidgeot." She said indicating they were all much safer.
"Great to hear.",Ash said before frowning. "Pidgeot...I'm sorry." Pidgeot tilted her head in confusion. "For not keeping my promise to you."
"Pidgeot."
"I said I would come back to see you, but I got so wrapped up in traveling other regions that I ended up forgetting." Ash said.
He then feels Pidgeot nuzzle her head on him. "Geo.",she said with a smile saying it's OK.
"I missed you so much." Ash said hugging her along with Pikachu.
The old friends embraced for a while until they released. "Hey Pidgeot? I'm just asking, but do you want to come back with us?"
Pidgeot was surprised by this, she thought after all these years she would remain in the forest protecting it.
"I mean if you have to protect all the Pokémon in the forest, then I totally understand. It was just a suggestion.",Ash said.
Pidgeot looks to the forest and then to Ash before making her choice. "Pidgeot." She nods moving towards him.
"S-seriously? You wanna come back?",Ash gasped but remembered. "But what about the forest?"
"Pidgeot." Pidgeot gestures to her wings indicating for him to get on.
Ash and Pikachu looked at her but nods. Once they got on Pidgeot's back, she flew into the air.
Looking around Ash saw Pidgoet had set up multiple areas in the forest where Pidgey and Pidgeotto could fly free without having to deal with the Spearow.
"Pika..",Pikachu said silently.
"Wow Pidgeot, you you fixed the entire forest." Ash said in awe.
"Geo.",Pidgeot nodded and flew around as all the Pidgey, Pidgeotto and Pidgeot call out to them. All the flying Pokemon look towards Pidgeot and call out to her.
"Looks like they're saying good bye don't you think?",Ash asks. Pikachu nodded.
Pidgeot smiles knowing she was going to miss them all so much.
Ash then tells her to fly towards Viridian City. She does so and heads towards the city. Landing at the nearby store Ash walks inside to get the supplies he needed.
Soon after a few hours of shopping him and Pikachu headed back to Pallet Town.
"It's good to have you back Pidgeot it's just like old times." Ash smiles.
"Pidgeo.",the large bird smiles.
"I still have your Pokeball." Ash said as they landed near his house and he took it out of his backpack.
Pidgeot looks at her old Pokéball and smiled. She tapped her beak onto the button and returned herself. Ash looks at the Pokeball and smiles before it flashed and disappered. Making it return to Prof. Oak's ranch.
The two headed inside and then see Delia talking on the phone with someone. "Thank you, he'll be so surprised tomorrow.",she said and hung up.
"Who was that Mom?" Ash asks walking in startling her.
"Ash! I-I didn't hear you come in!",Delia said.
"Yeah I just got back. You would not believe what happened." Ash said.
"Well let's talk about it at dinner.",she said.
As they sat down Ash told his mom about his reunion with Pidgeot and how she came back to be his Pokemon again. And she was happy an old friend of Ash reunited with him, and hinted that it might happen again.
The next day Ash was preparing for his trip to Hoenn as he made his way down Delia was standing in front of the door.
"Got everything?",She asks. Ash nodded.
"Yup. Team, equipment, food. I'm all set.",he said.
"Well Ash there's one more thing you might like to have with you." Delia said.
Ash and Pikachu rose an eyebrow. "Like what?"
Delia opens the door and out front Officer Jenny had pulled up in front of his house.
"Officer Jenny?" Suddenly from out of her side car a Squirtle and a Primeape pop out.
"S-Squirtle? Primeape?!",Ash gasped seeing his old Pokemon.
"I got some calls yesterday and the guy who trained Primeape and said he made him into a P1 Champion and wanted to give him back." Delia said as Primeape held up his belt to prove it.
"And your mother called the station yesterday and told me you were back in Kanto and about to head to Hoenn. So I thought this would be a good time to bring Squirtle with you.",Officer Jenny said.
Ash turns to his mom who had a smile on her face. "Mom you...?"
"I did." She finished causing him to smile widely and hug her.
"You're the best.",he said.
"I try Ash." She smiles hugging him back. "Now let's get you to the ferry."
Ash nods and looks at his two Pokémon. "It's great to see you guys again. You guys up for teaming up again though Hoenn?"
"Prime/ Squirtle." Both Pokemon nod at the idea.
Ash held his first team's Pokéballs and returned them both. They disappeared without a trace to Prof. Oak's lab.
"With these two back on my team I know I've got this." Ash grins.
An hour later Ash was at the docks about to board the ferry to Hoenn. "Mom...it's been a great month staying at home with you, but now I'm off again.",Ash said
"I knew it was only a matter of time, but I'm happy for you Ash. I know you'll do great." Delia smiles.
Ash took a deep breath. "We're gonna win it for sure this time."
Ash gives him mom one last hug before walking on board. A few minutes later the boat left taking Ash back to Hoenn.
CHAPTER END
Since this story is finally released, here are some things that'll happen.
1. Ash will return to Hoenn and retake the Ever Grande Conference. Ash will be getting new Pokemon. Even new ones from trading his Tauros. I don't know why didn't those dumb writers did that in that one episode in Johto.
2. Ash will start to know what he's doing and becoming abit smarter.
3. Ash's Pokemon WILL Evolve.
4. Ash WILL be able to use Mega-Evolution. (Annoyed he didn't get one. He could've had Charizard Y, but NO!)
5. The pairing of this story is Ash/May/Dawn.
6. This story will also be an Anti-Amourshipping story. So all of you Serena fanboys/fanboys have been warned, cause there WILL be Serena bashing. If you can't take that, then don't flame.
7. Let me know if you want Greninja to return soon.
8. What Pokemon should Ash, May or Dawn get/have?

10. Dawn and May will be participating in contests in Hoenn.
11. Characters from the games/manga will appear.
