Seymour was almost certain he was still dreaming. Whether it was from the sunlight through the window or the humming that woke him, he couldn't tell. It was so different than how he normally woke up. No cars were honking or pedestrians shouting. No one was screeching at him to get to work. Just the beautiful sound of his wife's hum was beside him, and he couldn't think of a better way to wake up. Seymour could already see the morning light through his lids, much brighter than in the city. It was hard to believe it was the same sun.
Without opening he felt her in his arms. She was snuggled up beside him laying her head down on his chest. With her finger she was trailing patterns in the sheets. Seymour thought the tune was absolutely lovely.
Seymour felt her lift her head off him. Without opening his eyes he knew she was smiling. She lay back down. Her song continued but now it had words.
"I'm his December bride
We made it safe at last
The hurt is all in yesterday
We left it in the past
He's lying here beside me
It feels just like a dream..."
This was a dream. It had to be. There was no way they'd really be here, that she'd really be in his arms. And yet here they were.
At this he opened his eyes. She was indeed smiling, as was he. He moved his hand to his wife's cheek and she pulled it over to her lips and gave it a brief kiss.
"Goodmorning Audrey."
The sun was shining in her bright eyes, free of both makeup and bruises.
Still holding her husband's hand against her cheek she whispered, "Goodmorning Seymour."
Reaching out she pushed his hair out of the way and settled her hand on his cheek as well, stoking back and forth with her thumb.
"Far from Skid Row
I knew we'd go
Somewhere that's green."
