No Pulse

Disclaimer: Sadly, I don't own Criminal Minds. (Though I do wish that I owned Reid.)

Summary: You've seen way too many dead bodies to be laying eyes on this one, your best friend. You know there's no going back now. (Rated T for suicide) One-shot.

You knock on his apartment door with JJ at your side but there's no answer. You wait. Knock again. Then water some more. The door's unlocked and you have to muster up enough courage to open it despite all of the alarm signals. You think the kid would be smarter than to leave his door unlocked with everything he's seen, but maybe he knew. He always seemed to know.

JJ starts screaming in your ear but you don't know why. Your eyes dart around the room until they land on something crimson.

You want to turn back around, but you find yourself following the trail of blood with a sickening feeling in your stomach. That's when you see him.

The metal of the gun in his hand is glistening in the midday sun. His unkept hair is caked with dried blood. On pure instinct, you place your hand on his cold neck and you don't even have to think about it.

There's no pulse. Nothing.

You don't know how long you sit there, tears streaming numbly down your face. Time is no longer a variable. JJ is sobbing, blubbering to him, telling him it's okay and asking him why he did it. But the thing is, he's not going to answer.

Somewhere you realize that you need to call Hotch. The man who sent you to check up on him. He needs to know. You go through the motions but don't comprehend what you are doing. There's people there, but JJ won't let go of his hand.

"JJ," you whisper, your voice cracking. She looks at you, her eyes bloodshot from crying. She shakes her head slightly before standing up, sobbing harder and reaching back out towards him as Hotch pulls her back. You wrap your arm around her because she looks like she could collapse any minute. You know that there's nothing you can say that'll make this better, so you don't say anything.

Nothing will ever be the same.

Later they tell you that it's confirmed a suicide, but you don't believe them. He would never. Somebody set him up.

You barely remember the funeral. It felt like you were in dream. You remember it, but it felt like it didn't happen.

"I'm concerned about you," Hotch calls you into his office one day to "talk about what happened."

"I don't need your concern, Hotchner," you spit the words at him as if they physically tasted nasty. You can't take the suffocating walls on the B.A.U. any longer so you walk out and don't look back. He can take his concern and shove it. Only you know him enough to know he would never kill himself. You hear JJ calling out to you but you don't turn around because you know.

You were right. Nothing is ever the same.

Geneses 45:15: "And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him."

A/n: Please, in your review, tell me on who you think is with JJ and who they find in the apartment. I hope I made it obvious, but not too obvious lol. Thank you for reading!
